And you cannot even do that if your hardware comes with M1pro/max processors, only the original M1 processor supports Big Sur.
Ok thanks for the information. I order the the iMac 24 M1 . It’s not the brand new M1pro/max- so it should work with Big Sur…
I’ll report back when it arrives and let yall know how it works out.

My new imac M1 arrived on Thursday.
Would you guys suggest I down grade the OS to Big Sur straight away?

Can someone explain how this is done if that’s what is required ?

Thanks so much . Does anyone else have some experience with Carbon and Monterey ?

I’m most certain it’ll will arrive with Monterey .

Thanks !

I don't have any first hand knowledge on this, but the way I understand it is that it's simply no longer possible to install system older than what it comes with. I think it has to do with the recovery partition, that it can't be rolled back, and can't coexist w/earlier versions. Sorry that's all I have. You'll have to research it.

EDIT:OK - see all the posts below before you proceed. This is more of a risk that it used to be. You may need to erase and reformat the entire disk, and install firmware using another Mac and Apple Configurator 2. You may brick the machine.

Yes definitely downgrade to Big Sur - should be possible from the Recovery Partition - plenty of online guides.
Use the latest version of Big Sur - 11.6.1 - which is probably what it will install anyway.

You don't want to be using Monterey at the moment if you can avoid it.

And if the recovery partition IS Monterey?
That was kinda my point.

There's Internet Recovery. That may use Big Sur. Otherwise you will have to download Big Sur and put it on a USB stick and boot from that. There are guides all over the place.
Those are the three most common ways of doing a complete OS install from scratch.

Guide here. Lots of blather about backing up, then the actual instructions.

5 minute search and I find this:

If your Mac originally shipped with macOS 12 Monterey, then that is its default version of macOS, and no earlier versions can be installed.

You may have to downgrade the firmware first, as described here.

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guid...dd5f3c75ad/mac

Unfortunately I don't have a suitable Mac here to test with. It has previously always been possible to downgrade the OS to a version which existed when the machine model was released, even if the particular one you bought came with something later. Apple seems to be making this more and more difficult.
Generally I wouldn't advise fiddling about to this degree, but Monterey and PT are really not friends at all. So I think it's worth persisting with trying this, regardless of what Sweetwater says.
