Default Metric Halo Transient Designer?

hey guys,

anyone have experience with the metric halo transient designer vs. the spl vs. the sonnox?

I have the latter two and the MH is on sale for $25 through the end of the month. that's no-brainer territory and since i've found that all the transient designers are different, wondering what people's thoughts are on it?

I'd demo it but i've already blown my MU production bundle demo.

thanks in advance!

b

I have used it a bit but prefer the sound of the SPL in general. The Sonnox looks pretty feature laden and sounds good from what I've seen. However, their stuff isn't cheap. I haven't updated their EQ and Dynamics for a few years now or really missed them.

thanks stephen. could you at all describe the differences betw the SPL and MH? I'm especially interested in the differences in the sustain knob as the SPL is the only TD i have with it and it's so useful.

The SPL is my go-to. It lives in my dynamics pref so it always comes up when i go to instantiate a plugin. I find it to be pretty gentle but works most of the time.

I do own the sonnox and it's great but much more aggressive than the SPL. It certainly has its uses.

SPL sounds more natural and transparent save at extreme values. MH I can hear working in a way I don't like so much.

Probably best to demo it or at $25 snap one up!

Default Metric Halo Transient Designer?

I think I own all three. I got Sonnox first and love it. I got MH's version next and was super unimpressed. I ended up with a grab bag of PA plugs from a guy and the SPL version was included.

I have since updated to SPL + TD and it's really the only one I use anymore b/c of the Sustain feature.... a really really helpful tool and super easy and quick to use, (mostly on bass and drums personally) (man it will sustain the sound of a snare hit, worth every penny)

It's been a few years since I've played with the MH version but i don't remember it sounding good at all, so it went into the virtual dungeon.

You may be able to use it but from what I've found, you own the best 2 out of 3 out there in the wild....stick with them.

I'm sure MH will reset the demo if you ask them.

If I could only have one, it would be the Sonnox Envolution, but having said that, prior to it coming out, the Metric Halo was one of my favourites because the little pop down underneath gave you more detailed control.

If you need another transient shaper, then $25 is pretty damn good! (Try some of the online places for an even bigger discount. I ended up getting the Dirty Delay a month or so ago for $21.25 from one of them!)

Default Metric Halo Transient Designer?

Yes envolution is def on my radar as well. I wish they'd add it to my elite bundle!

So MH support reached out to me after I posted this and the did issue me another demo license.

I tried it on a mix last night and it def had its place in my toolbox, esp for $25.

It's more aggressive than b the spl, like the sonnox, and also adds a forwardness, kinda like a compressor.

Haven't compared it to the sonnox yet.

But having more choices of. sustain knobs is good to me.

I'll still go for the SPL first but it's good to have for sure.

So I went for it. It was under $22 at audiodeluxe.
