Default Problems getting MIDI Input Signal into ProTools with Alesis Control Pad and ART X-11

Is there a list of non-compatible MIDI controllers for Pro Tools? I have had problems getting input signal into Pro Tools with both the Alesis Control Pad and the ART X-11 MIDI Mastercontroller. With the Control pad I can get the test tone in the AMS but no input signal and with the X-11 the MIDI LED flashes on my Mbox 2 Pro but no test tone. Can anyone help?

Go into setups>midi>midi studio>midi window and make sure your device is there and connected.

I have already gone into the Audio MIDI Setup and connected each device. It seems like I can get signal to the AMS but not to Pro Tools. I know with MIDI and Instrument tracks in Pro Tools you can select input devices but I have messed around with those settings too. I'm just stuck.

Maybe I can get help in another way. My band is wanting to be able to start and stop backing tracks/effects via MIDI controller for our live performances. We all don't have the money for in-ear monitors so having tracks that are the length of a full-song are not ideal. We are looking to be able to start them during key parts of the songs to beef up our sound. Does anyone know a good way to do this with Pro Tools and a reliable and compatible MIDI controller live?
