Alesis SR-16 Midi Setup problems
Hello Folks.
This is my first post. I'm using a Mac G5 OS 10.3.5, Digi 002 Rack/Pro Tools LE 6.4, and an Alesis SR-16 Drum Machine. I've read through the Pro Tools and SR-16 reference manuals for setup, but I'm still having problems with certain concepts and setup. I have read some of the previous posts on this subject, but I'd like to get further clarification. Here is my configuration: SR-16 Midi Channel set to 1 SR-16 Midi Drum In - On V1 SR-16 Midi Drum Out - on SR-16 Midi Clock In - off SR-16 Midi Clock Out - on SR-16 Midi MidiThru - on SR-16 in perform mode to play several patterns arranged into a song. Pro Tools LE 6.4 Midi Input Devices - all selected, including Digi 002 rack input Midi Thru - enabled Default Thru Instrument Digi 002 Port 1-1 Midi Input Filter - All Input Quantize - disabled Midi Merge - deselected Click - disabled 1 midi track configured and record enabled Midi Input Selector - Pro Tools input-1, channel 1 Midi Output Selector - Digi 002 Port 1, channel 1 Automation Mode Selector - Auto Read I've double checked my midi cable connections SR16 Midi Out --> Digi002 Midi In Digi002 Midi Out 1 --> SR16 Midi In Pro Tools Aux Input Track - set to Mic/Line 1-2 Stereo Page 173, Step 12 of the Pro Tools reference says " Make Sure MIDI>MIDI Thru is selected, then play some notes on your MIDI controller. the MIDI instrument assigned to the track should sound, and the track's meters should register MIDI activity." When I play the SR-16 song pattern, no track meter activity occurs in the MIDI track. I can hear the song playing through my monitor speakers and see meter activity in the Aux Input Track. Why is the MIDI track not picking up any signal? Page 174 To play back recorded MIDI tracks: "3. Click Play in the Transport window to begin playback. The recorded MIDI data plays back through each track's assigned device (port) and channel." Does this mean that the MIDI comes back to the SR-16 in order to play it? This would indicate that I must have the SR-16 connected whenever I want to play back the recorded drum track. If this is the case, why, in general, is MIDI useful at all? I was thinking MIDI would be useful to get the MIDI drums synched with the Pro Tools bar/meter measurements, so that I could edit more effectively. If you have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong as far as the MIDI input track is concerned, or if you can clear up confusion about MIDI in general, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks, DJC64 |
