Default 16 bit adat session dumped to Pro Tools

My friend records his cd's on 16 bit adats. He wants to drive a long distance, bring the adat to my house, then dump his session to my Pro Tools. I will then record my part in Pro Tools, using my plugins, then dump the session back to his adat and send him home.
I have an 001. I record through Brent Averills, to a Rosetta and lightpipe into my computer. I have an extra 3' long lightpipe cable.

Would anyone be so kind as to tell me how to do this?
thanks.

Hi,

Connect the ADAT lightpipe out to your DIGI optical in. Set up hardware settings in LE to sync to optical in and check the ADAT box. Set DIGI to record 44.1 or 48/24 bit to match the ADAT setting (the extra bits are no problem and better if you use DIGI plug-ins later). Set up a session with 8 channels, inputs assigned optical 1-8, and a master fader if you like. That'll serve as your record template. I'd suggest bringing in each tune as a session based off of the template so you only record the tracks you want for each, name them, and even get a rough mix as you bring them in.

If your friend has left you tracks, filler'up to eight total in PT, or deal with the concept of submixing the bounce back to ADAT for your friends use...To bounce back, make sure your DIGI optical out now goes to the ADAT's in and the ADAT is set to record optical in at 44.1 or 48 to match the original ADAT tracks. To transfer track for track up to eight, set each channel's output to optical 1-8 individually (1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc). Also put a 16bit dither on each channel to take it back to 16 for the ADAT. Not sure if your plan is to fly your tracks into place(you'll need some sync to adat help there), or just re-transfer everything back to the same or new tape. The latter is easier and you may be able to improve on the original tracks as well as add your own within PT before you lay it back to ADAT. Be sure you check with your friend before you reuse his tape though!

Hope that helps,

MR

Thanks a lot. You mention Digi optical ins and outs. One the back of my box there is only s/pdif, midi, and 1/4" inputs and outputs. I don't see any place for an optical connection on the box.

The optical ins are on the PCI card in your Mac that connects to your Digi001 box.

He said in his first post he has an 001 -

the 001's optical ports are actually on the PCI card, not the breakout box. Look on the card in your computer, you'll see the two ADAT ports next to the connector where the breakout box cable goes.

What they said...And the IN is the one closest to the multipin connector.

Good Luck,

And the out is the one with the red light coming out of it (when the power is on).

Hey, two more things come to mind about going from PT back to the ADAT.

1) Set PT to internal sync, and the adat to accept external sync at the correct sample rate.

2) When assigning the PT channels to an optical (or any) out you will only have the choice of sending to a pair (optical 1/optical 2, etc.) Because of this you'll need to send two adjacent PT channels to the same pair of outputs, panning one hard left and the other hard right. That will give you channel for channel transfers...

Sorry. It's hard to remember everything sitting here at work...
