Default re: buffer size error message

i m having error message saying that i have to set buffer size in the hardware setting during recroding, i have a p3 866 256 ram with a echo gina 24 soundcard with the protools free windows 98se, when i set the buffer size to max, i record without any problem but i get latency on monitoring running thru my mackie 1402 mixer, when i set it to 128, i dont hear any delay on my guitar but after i record for about 10sec, it freezes up and showing the error message again. i read the instruction, they said i should be able to use the gina 24 with 256 buffer size setting.
any idea?

anything will help
thanks
