Default Mute automation disabled?

I imported two sessions together recently for a mix (dialog in one, BGs and FXs in the other) and although I've got mute automation suspended, whenever I mute a BG or FX track they turn back on. I'll either mute a track while paused and it'll turn on when I hit play, or I'll hit it during playback and it'll turn back on if it hits a mute automation point.

The dialog tracks are all fine though, hitting the mute button is completely independent of any automation.

Any suggestions?

Suspending an individual automation parameter will only inhibit writing new automation for that parameter. The existing automation will play back unless the channel automation is in off mode. If you delete all the existing mute automation data on a channel, you can toggle the mute status at will on that channel regardless of its automation mode, assuming that mute writing is still disabled. If you want to modify the existing mute automation, you'll either have to edit it graphically and/or write enable mutes and the desired channels then write new mutes or remove existing ones.

This has always been such a pain, OMFs and editing cause mute breakpoints in playlists.

You have to view mute automation and remove all of them.

I've started using a handy key command to bypass the whole issue: pull up the mute automation on one of your tracks, and apple+click the automation pull-down menu -- mute will grey out and cease inciting fury. The logical extension is that apple+option+click disables mute automation on all the tracks.

Be careful to get the commands right though... I once did some combination of keys (probably involving 'shift' in some capacity) that disabled ALL the automation on ALL my tracks. Which was quite problematic until I was able to backtrack and figure out what had happened...

see here for selectively suspending one automation parameter.

I have mute automation writing and playback suspended in all of my templates. All automation reads and writes except for pesky mute automation.
