Default MIDI not playing back

I've got pro tools 9, m-box mini and BX5 monitors and recently purchased the Keystudio. I/O settings are fine, track playback thru the monitors but not MIDI tracks that I created... The keyboard is connected, I get the signal in pro tools even when it plays back, but no sound in the mix window in I/O for MIDI track there's no out 1 and 2...

Midi has no sound of its own. It is note info that needs to feed some kind of midi-triggered sound source. That can be a keyboard or synth with midi(fed from PT to the keyboard) and audio connections from the keyboard into the session. Or it can be sent to a midi plugin instrument like MiniGrand or Hybrid. Start with a stereo INSTRUMENT track. Insert an instrument plugin(MiniGrand is good for testing). Hit the red RECORD button on the track and play your midi keyboard. You SHOULD hear the piano plugin. If its working, try recording your playing on the keyboard. That will record the midi info and when you play it back, the midi notes should play the piano sound. Select(in the EDIT window) to show NOTES on the Instrument track(default is regions) and you should see the midi notes on the piano roll.

Default Re: MIDI not playing back

I am having a similar issue: I am new to PT, but not new to the whole DAW process. I came from Cubase & Nuendo, took a 7 year break, and came back using Reaper. I bought Pro Tools 9 and upgraded to 10. I also purchased Superior Drummer and a Roland TD 9 kit. I have tried every way possible that I can think of, outside of contacting Avid support over the phone. I have MIDI signal coming into PT, with Superior Drummer in the "insert" and the record enabled. I get signal in, but no audition sound. Recording does not even register notes in the roll. When I click SD with the mouse I get sounds. I have Roland setup to trigger the SD sounds, and again I get signal in, but no sound out. I also tried using an AKAI MP18 to trigger MIDI...again, I get signal but no sound. I have set this up in Reaper, just to see and it works no problem. I have owned this for a little over a month, and have yet to use it. I am extremely frustrated. I have researched online, YouTube, in these forums, and even enlisted the help of "experts" at my local Guitar Center that have come over to my home, and they are stumped..as am I. At the risk of beating my head against my desk, I am reaching out for help. What the hell am I doing wrong?

Hard to say what's wrong without some kind of glimpse at your screen. Can you post a screen shot of the MIX window, showing Instruments and IO assignments on the track? Using a TD-10 kit here with SD2 on a stereo instrument track and it works great(with essentially no fussing at all).

Thumbs up Re: MIDI not playing back

I finally figured it out. Silly me, I thought that I had installed all the updates to Superior Drummer, but I didn't. As soon as I updated and went into PT it worked with no issues. albee1952, I really appreciate that you offered to help, and will keep you in mind if I have any other issues. Thanks for not only checking the forum, but also offering ideas to us. Much appreciated.
