Re: Re-learning to mix ITB?
Quote:
Going back to the topic of this thread I think I'm more along the lines of what Chris said on the first page when it comes to mixing ITB. (his screen caps look like what I do in terms of levels and routing) I start the mix by setting the loudest part (likely drums) to peak at anywhere from -18 to -10 and I sum everything to an AUX not a master fader. by doing so I can now mix with my ears only and not even worry about headroom. The end result mix typically has peaks at no more than -4 (often lower). I always record the mix to a track. Mastering gets a copy of the mix.L + mix.R files from the audio files folder. If I do the mastering myself its never in the same session. When I just started mixing/recording I was trying to go as hot as I can without clipping, but I quickly dropped it. When I mix/record lower it sounds cleaner and more dynamic to me.

Re: Re-learning to mix ITB?
You can apply a master fader to that aux bus and avoid the clipping that way. At least you can in LE... (Although LE doesn't clip anyway internally)
"Always keep levels low" isn't much smarter than "Always print as hot as possible." It's often a little smarter, but it will never be as smart as "Always keep levels where they sound their best."

Re: Re-learning to mix ITB?
So are you saying your mixes usually have all the faders down in the -20dB to -40dB range (on the actual fader, not the meter) most of the time? Or are they in the +2dB to -5dB range most of the time?

Re: Re-learning to mix ITB?
Maybe 0.05% of Pro Tools users have even a vague concept of what a Master Fader in fact is.
For one thing, they don't get "routed to"...they are always present for all busses and outputs, you can just show them or hide them.

Re: Re-learning to mix ITB?
I hardly ever go past 0. Some faders are as low as -12, like drum rooms and OHDs but not many others. Totally depends on the mix and what needs to be louder or softer. And some, as few as possible, move with automation.

Re: Re-learning to mix ITB?
Then you haven't lived, my friend. Automation is what makes records EXCITING. Check out this piano lick here....a guitar lick there....the gravelly roughness of the voice as it tails off...etc etc
