Default RAM Capacity

According to Apple spec my Macbook 2.16 Ghz has a max RAM capacity of 2GB of RAM. Has anyone heard of this scenario where you can install 2x2GB and it will use up to 3GB of RAM?

My BlackBook is 2.16ghz and has the 4gb config running 3gb in the Activity Monitor.

It works fine.
