Default Backup solution needed

I'm looking for a SCSI-based backup system that is:
1. Stable
2. Mac and PC compatible
3. A good value per Gig (both media and hardware)
4. Somewhat fast

If you can provide brand, model, price and where to buy, it would be appreciated.

Depending on the size of your backups CDR is verry cheap and Retrospect is cross platform.

I'm running Retrospect (www.dantz.com) with Sony DDS4 tape drives.
It's a little more expensive than CDR but it's quick and stable. Each tape stores 20Gb and costs about $US25.
They've kept me happy
Happy hunting.

Hi,

I use the Ecrix VXA.
The tapes are a little more than DDS4
but the format is more robust.

I have one and it's great.

I had 3 DDS4 drives and none of them worked. Apparently it's a problem with the ATTO card, but only on certain systems. No one at Glyph can quite figure it out. They tell me about 1 and 20 users never end up getting their DDS4 drives working right, no matter how many units they get.

Everytime I'd get a replacement, it seemed like it worked for a while, but when I tried to restore, it would choke. Lost some data. The biggest problem seems to be a read one, but it's hard to figure it out. A lot of people have been using DDS4 with no problems though. Mine is finally going back for good, so I'll just use Retrospect and CDRs-- it's a great combo.

I have found that the DDS-4 drive only works on my setup (ATTO SEIV Dual Channel) if it is last on the chain with a terminator. Otherwise I have had excellent luck with mine.

I've tried every combo. Spent 3 mos on the phone with Glyph tech support. Sent my Trip back twice. The drive still doesn't work reliably-- in fact, now it's giving my computer a hard crash every time it switches to "compare".

I went for a Glyph combo of an 18 gig drive and an AIT tape backup with Retrospect. The backup is so fast and clean that I cannot imagine a better system. Each tape holds 25 gig uncompressed and costs about $80 I think. It is quite expensive but well worth the $$ when you think of the down time you save by not using a slower medium.

Screw DDS Tape! DVDRAM all the way! 50pin scsi DVDRAM, internal bare drive @ www.macgurus.com, $450.00 these guys rule! I love DVDRAM!!!! 9.4 GIGS, $40 a disc @ macgurus. You will also need the newest version of Speedtools DVD/CDR drivers,$38.00, which can be had @ the gurus site. This drive also uses ALL DVDRAM media, 2.7, 5.2...yada yada.
Its so easy, just like coping a floppy disc, drag-n-drop! I backed up 3.9 gigs in about an
hour and a 20 minutes.
Iam VERY pleased!

The only pro solutions are AIT or VXA . And AIT is really the best of the 2. Don't let anybody tell you different. They don't work in a pro studio if they do... If it's for a personal studio then get whatever makes the most economical sense.
