Fix #1 for "Protools could not initialize the current playback device"
Hi, here's a solution that worked today 13th June 2012
PT X on MacBook Pro with no external H/W I/O Problem "Protools could not initialize the current playback device" Tried trashing all preferences, still not fixed. Solution Launch Pro Tools Wait for Splash Screen and hold down the N key 'till hardware Setup shows allowing Aggregate I/O to be selected. Why did the fault show? PT X had selected the MICROPHONE as the playback device!

Glad to hear you sorted it out.
P.S. Searching "could not initialize the current playback device" at avid.com returns this KB article at the top of the list. (We are modifying it to reflect v9 and higher.)
