PT's Bar#1 and midi file import
Hi,
I am importing a midi file into PT 8.0cs3 for tempo/time sig info. At it's origin (logic9) the midi file and cue started at bar# minus1 (-1). The PT session also has a -1 bar start. When I import, via spot to bar, PT session changes to a bar#1 start, removing all previous bars and displacing all tempi and time sig data. Bar 1 in both sessions is set at 1:00:00:00 frame rate 23.9. Does PT disallow any midifile import prior to bar#1 ? Thanks for any insight. Mel |

Re: PT's Bar#1 and midi file import
This is a great topic, one near and dear to my heart.
I recently, as of PT 8, moved to doing all my sequencing, mixing and production in PT. I worked for the last 20 years or so in DP, then a DP for midi and PT mixing combo. I am finding some drawbacks to the way PT deals with the whole negative bars, negative realtime clock thing, and it is really bumming me out. DP deals with this magnificently by allowing the ability to set the realtime clock independently and to have negative offsets. I have had various email exchanges with Digi tech support ( who have been VERY responsive) and really it just seems that PT cannot do things very well in this department. It seems very klutzy and inelegant. If I am missing something and someone can enlighten me, please do. Anyway, to the original question, the best I can tell, the only solution is renumber bars. It seems that tempo/meter info comes in from an smf import , but not bar numbers. Anyway that's the best I've found. Danny |

Re: PT's Bar#1 and midi file import
Nice to know Digi is aware of it and responsive.
It seems the renumbering of bars after midi file import whacks out some kind of alignment between PT and the sequence program (Logic9). With extensive tempo changes and time sig changes, it's impractical to realign each manually once the map is in PT. |

Re: PT's Bar#1 and midi file import
Right - I've not done it with Logic but it acts the same way with DP. While Digi tech support was very responsive, we hit a wall pretty quickly in finding a solution.
I hope this will get better in future revs but I have a feeling we are in the minority with this and they have many bigger fish to fry. I'm actually looking at going back to DP or on to Logic as this area is pretty limiting in PT adn it just gets more frustrating. I'm also finding the score feature set pretty limited as well in PT. At least they go it in there but it's not ready for use in scoring, at least not for me. |
