Default Pro Tools 11: Pops/crackles when scrolling mix window in playback

Hi all,

I seem to be experiencing some crackling when I am scrolling the mix window or edit window in playback of a reasonably busy track.

It doesn't happen when I scroll in playback at the end of the track when there's no audio.

It's Lessoned if I'm in the mix window, and I reduce the size of the window and scroll.

It's also lessoned when I lower the buffer size from 128 to 256.

Is this normal behavior... or is it a graphics card incompatibility or something?

Sorry if it's a newbe question!

Sean Meredith-Jones

Default Re: Pro Tools 11: Pops/crackles when scrolling mix window in playback

..one important point is RAM , you have only 4GB ,
PT11 needs 8 GB ,

you also use "shared memory" for your outdatet graphics card ,
the card uses 1,8GB from your RAM , which means there are only
2,2GB RAM ( you have 4GB installed) left for PT and OS .
AGAIN : PT needs 8GB

Dont use Graphics Card with shared memory and get a decent
compatible card with dedicated memory only ,(NVIDIA is preffered for PT)

your cpu is also an older modell but may be sufficient for sessions which
are not very complex , ram is more important here

you have an ssd installed , older models could lead in problems when used
as audio-drives for PT.When having installed 8GB Ram AND a new Graphics Card
and the problem persists , try an non-ssd hd for audio.
BUT RAM AND GRAPHICS FIRST

+1 for the above.
Also, that CPU should be able to overclock quite a bit with a decent cooler.
If you are not using it I would disable the SoundBlaster in Bios or at least get rid of the extra SB software.

Quick question, do you have "Ignore errors during playback" enabled in Playback Engine?

I have provided a shopping list for you... $Less than $200 for a new discrete video card, plus 8GB RAM: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=18838734

And you should really consider using that awesome SSD as your C: drive, keeping your audio on the larger HDD.

Thanks everyone!

Mesaone: just came back from the computer store trying to get those components. That particular video card won't fit in my enclosure... So they got one with similar specs with a smaller heat sink... A GeForce 210.

Re: the Ram. No DDR2 1066 in stock. Also, 2 matching sticks to what I have, also will not fit inside my case... so I'd have to get a bigger case and transfer everything... Kind of a pain. Without seeing the ram sticks mesaone suggested, it would be a risk ordering them.

Sooo.... They did have some Corsair DDR2 800mhz sticks in stock which do fit... They're just not 1066mhz. The service dept said it wouldn't really matter that they're not matched... They'll just run at 800mhz I guess? At least this way, i would have 8 gigs of ram. If there is a problem w/the ram mismatch, there's a 30day guarantee and I can just take them back.

I get the machine back tomorrow... So I guess we'll see. Thanks again!

Not sure I'd be going back to that store to ask about what's good for an audio computer that runs Pro Tools.

Good thing you have 30 days.

Cheers,

Do you know if it will in fact be a problem?

Do you happen to know what sort of symptoms I might look for to see if there is a problem?

I could also just pull the 1066mhz ram and get another two matching 800mhz..

Thoughts?

The card I showed you is too big for your case? I'm surprised. I guess the heatsink was knocking into something? It's not a large card. Your motherboard has three PCIe x16 slots, it can go into any one of them.

As for the RAM, it's four 2gig sticks (240 pin DDR2 1066, compatible with your motherboard). The reason I chose 1066 is because the 1200 modules are way too expensive for some reason. This will bring your total to 8GB. Four identical modules will in no way be mismatched.

+1 - 800 Mhz is a terrible choice.
Neweeg or Amazon should have a few different matched memory kit compatible with your motherboard.
The speed and matching are important.
Most memory makers have configuration tools online where you just enter the motherboard model number.
You should be able to find the measurements online for the modules and just check the clearance on the board.
The midline ones are usually the best deal and the heat spreaders are smaller so they fit in more systems.
Not to make it complicated, but the latency numbers are just as important as the speed listing.

Yes, the heatsink was the issue with that card... The one they chose had a smaller one.

I'll order those matched ram sticks you suggested and see if I can get em in there. Didn't know the speed of the ram difference would make that much of a difference?
