Default Playing to a playback track

Hello Digi peers I just wanted to ask a very simple basic question. I am new to the world of Protools and need some basic help, so please bare with me. I wanted to ask how can I play audio in protools session during a playback of a track. So for example I just recorded an 8 bar piano chord on track 1,and on track 2 I want to play a bassline to compliment the piano. But when I play back the piano I can't here my bassline and could only here the bassline when the playback stops, or when it is in record mode. The only way I can here both the piano and bassline is when I am actually recording the audio. Is there a way I can setup protools so that I can just listen to the playback and play to it so I can get the part down? Any info would help. Thanks in advance.

Matt.

If the bass track is record enabled you should be able to hear what you are playing as you listen to the piano track..just push play on the transport.Do you have the Input/Playback levels adjusted properly on the front of your Mbox?

ok u have to put the bass track into record ready
then press Alt + K and that will switch Pro tools to
Input Only Monitoring... then just press play and you
will be able to hear the bass while playing back the piano
when you are done your gonna want to press Alt + K again to
set Pro Tools back to Auto Input Monitoring...

if you don't want to use the shortcut i think the buttons for
this are in the Operation's menu at the top

You should be able to hear the Bass no matter which way the input monitor is set.It will only meter when your playing, if it's set to 'input only' monitor but you should be able to hear it either way.If you want no latency you would leave it on Auto and adjust your Input?playback levels

Another easy alternative is to play thru an Aux Input - just remember to raise the cvolume on the track. No need tro rec enable as its not available.

hey bazzle ... you seem to know your stuff, maybe you can answer a question for me

how do you monitor using the peak meters a record enabled track during normal playback. when i have an artist in the booth i like to play the track and let them practice while i setup and make sure there wont be any clipping, if i cant see the peak meters during playback im forced to have em do a trial run just to make sure they wont clip and thats frustrating.

With Auto Input you get to hear the audio on the track up until the punch in point and after. No I don't live on this board I just toggle back and forth when I take a smoke break.

oh i knew that!!

i just started utilizing the punch in feature the other day, very useful for recording musically challenged rappers, (how can they succeed if they dont know that a bar isnt where you order drinks!!!!:))

smoke break???
it must be 4:20 all day where you live at
