Default cross-platform file transfers

I'm running Protools 5.3.1 on a PC at home.
My school is running Protools 5.1.1 on a MAC.

What would be the best way for me to transfer files?

CD-R?
Firewire hard drive formatted to fat32?

Will I want to throw the machines out a window trying to make it work?

cd is the thing to go i think.

Burn the cd's in the joliet filesystem, and make sure they have joliet at schoold aswell. I think most burner-programs support Joliet.

For PC to Mac:

-Open the desired session(s) on your PT LE 5.3.1, WinXP system
-Choose File>Save Session Copy In...
-Choose either AIFF or WAV for the Audio File Type
-Enable the “Enforce Mac/PC Compatibility” option

Please note the following when moving data from WinXP to Mac OS via CD-R:
-Macintosh systems can only recognize data CD's created on a Windows if you install the Joliet extension, avialable here:
http://www.digidesign.com/download/ptutil.html

For Mac to PC:

-Open the desired session(s) in Pro Tools 5.1 Mac
-Choose File>Save Session Copy In”
-Choose either AIFF or WAV for the Audio File Type (Windows does not recognize the SDII file format)...AIFF and WAV file formats support 24 bit 44.1kHz data.
-Enable the “Enforce Mac/PC Compatibility” option

NOTES:
-If you are using SCSI (or HFS formatted CD-ROMs), you will need to install MacOpener (DataViz) on the Windows machine. It allows you to read, write, and format Mac HFS drives, CD's and Floppies. MacDrive seems to work better if you are using Firewire drives to transfer files.

-If you are burning CD-ROMs of the session(s) on the Mac and not using MacOpener, make sure you use the ISO9660 format.

Given the limited storage capacity fo CD-R, a FW drive is your best best.

Make sure the File Exchange control panel is loaded on the mac, the the appropriate PT extensions are associated in the PC exchange tab.

Hope this is helpful.

I vote for Firewire. I have had some songs be about a gig when all's said an done and it's just easier to have a drive that i can port around. Not to nmention the time issue of how long it takes to burn CDs then you have varification, etc.

man, how many times does it have to be said!

burning cd's on the pc for use on a mac: use UDF format.

burning cd's on a mac for use on a pc with roxio/adaptec toast: MAC/PC hybrid.

none of this stuff with eight character file names, joliet extension, etc. simply put the cd in and it works.

mac opener and mac drive can bight my short and curlies. windows xp (and NT/2000) has a habit of destroying HFS or HFS+ volumes before the mac opener/macdrive drivers are loaded. then you have to use disk warrior or norton utilities to recover the volume. what a pain in the tail!

use a FAT32 volume to transfer files to and from the mac - if file exchange is enabled, you can copy the session directly to or from the FAT32 volume. (note that you cannot use the FAT32 volume as your PT drive on the mac.)

oh, yeah, ALAWYS, NO MATTER WHAT, ENABLE MAC/PC COMPATIBILITY!

I'll get a link up to that site too. You do a great job at making it look clean on that website and easy to read and understand. Thanks for doing this. Integrate what minimoog is saying too if you can understand it. I like to make it as easy as possible and if it doesn't require a bunch of third party software then I'm all for it. I was under the impression from last year's discussions that you just needed to get the Joliet extensions correct for PC to Mac and you could do a direct transfer with DVD or CD. From Mac to PC I didn't think there were any issues, just a Wav format with PC/Mac compatiblity enabled and it transfers directly with no problems. What is with all this third party **** all of a sudden?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Alright bro,
I like your approach here, now I just need a little better explanation so that I can understand what you are saying. Maybe divide it into Mac to PC, then PC to Mac. We need the most simple transfer method available and I think you have it.

Didn't someone mention something about using WinZip or Stuffit to save the "Copy of ------" folder, then burning it to a cd-r or dvd-r works too??? Doing it this way, you won't have to worry about file names, they'll all be the same??? I may have to try it out. Would the Winzip or Stuffit compression hurt the audio files????
