Wow! When did it come out? I just ran a random update check this morning, hoping for an update to iMessage, and came up with nothing!

If you "didn't mean to update", that probably suggests that you have the auto System Updates enabled ... which is not a good idea.... especially since it also means that you did not get the "Combo Updater" which is what Avid always recommends for Pro Tools system updates.

I would disable that auto setting now ... one of these days you might get a system update that leaves you dead in the water - and in need of a complete reinstall while your client waits.

I actually don't have the auto update enabled, just so use to updating my apple products I did it forgetting the avid golden rule: You don't update system software until a avid approved update is released. Once you press the update button you can't "un-press" it so I went with it hoping for the best outcome. Got to be a lot more careful next time !!!

The Apple software update doesn't install the combo updater, which is what you need.

Maybe I should ask this question on the Apple support site but what's the difference what is the combo update give you - that being said I must say I'm a new Mac user so any information given would be greatly appreciated

The Combo update is the same update. It gives you nothing more or less. I don't know excactly why it is suggested.

But my guess is that is a safer update. When you use software Update app on you MAC you are dependent on the internet stream to get everything right. That is not failsafe by any means.

The Combo is an installer you download to system and then install the package yourself. Less to go wrong here.

The combo update is less prone to errors, but to be honest, I haven't noticed any drawbacks from using the software updater. But if you have any errors, it is recommended to download the combo updater and use that.
