To the OP,

having used a U87 for 20+ years for vocals only, not using it for anything else like 19 3/4 years I sold it and later "downgraded" to a TLM 103, I haven't missed anything ever since.

WOW! Are you sure there wasn't something going wrong with your U87? All of that aside, that's now two people that I've seen talk about selling or giving away mics. In my experience, I've always regretted that choice. Call me a hoarder, but when it comes to gear...you never know when you'll want 'that sound' that you used to get. I did however also lean towards the TLM 103 more frequently when tracking 'emo' and rock in the early 2000's.

I've got a pair of TLM103's and I would never trade/sell a U87 for them. They're nice mics but I don't care for them on solo vocals. Groups - maybe.

You might consider a Blue Baby Bottle. Great reviews (not only at Sweetwater), good price, could def match the style of your music
soundwise and is said to be quite versatile.

You can check YT to hear the mic as I just had a peek I saw there are many videos of guys using it
and it sounds really nice for the price. There´s something kinda "expensive" in the sound quality
which cannot be found in lots of mics in this price range.
Anyway. Have a great time, all the best,

+1. I use my TLM103 for voiceover, but not for sung vocals. The TLM103 is great for AC guitar and many other things, but it's no U87 !!!

SHURE SM7B. If it's good enough for Steven Tyler, James Hetfield, Michael Jackson, ect, it's good enough for me...

Best all around vocal mic for a loud singer. I own a C12a, a REAL U87, a 4050, and have access to U47s, u67's ect. I always end up with the SM7b if the singer is loud.

Best part is it is $350!!!!

I also like the SM-7, but its not a "first choice"(but absolutely one you want in a well-stocked mic locker). I still will put the Miktek C7 up against any U87(and buy lots of goodies with the cash I saved). I A-B'd it against a nice purple-badged U87 and it kept up nicely.

I just sent in a CAD M179 to Joly to be modded... Looking forward to having a U87 clone with a continuously variable polar pattern. I'll be doing a shootout with a U87ai the day after it arrives.

Kris: I often choose a SM7 or PR40 over a U87. Especially for male rock vocals. Still interested in trying out that Telefunken M82, to see how it compares.
