AIT-s Data Storage

hey all,

It's time to break the habit of just buying another hard drive, and to get into some form of reliable data storage. I'm curious what people are using for tape-backup. AIT-2 seems fairly reasonable (I'm thinking $1000 - $1500 for a drive). Anything specific I should be looking for in a drive? Brand recommendations? Thanks!

From what I've seen it's a dying format. At least to us. Haven't used our glyph AIT drive in at least 3 years.

IMHO, DVD-R is cheaper and easier and anyone can read it.

The good doctor knows of what he speaks... We used to have an AIT drive... The problem with AIT is that the format is not "native"if you will, so you're dependant on the back-up software. All ours were done with Mezzo, for example, which means that every time we upgraded a system we had to upgrade the software. On the other hand the DVD's I burned back in OS 9 on my lowly G4 466 still read just fine on my spanking new G5. However with ANY back-up medium it's a good idea to re-back them up every four or five years to a newer format, just to avoid having to jump through hoops to get them back when you want them (thank god for interns!)

Thanks Marti! Up to 50GB on one disk.. that's amazing... exactly what I was looking for! It's always been a bit of a PITA to back up an 80GB project to multiple DVD-R's... this is great.

We are currently archiving with a Quantum DLT-S4 drive and EMC Retrospect. The DLT-S4 drive stores 800 gigs native. It is absolutely rock solid (and expensive), but worth the money if you have lots of data to archive. The tape cost per gig is low ($80 per tape for 800 gigs of storage).
