Studio monitors

Hi.
I finally found some small amount of money to invest in a pair of monitors for my small home studio. After doing some recearch, reading and listening, it seems to me that M Audio BX5 are a very good acquisition for my setup.

i dont like the maudio bx5's at all. theres way to much highs when i listened to them at gc. in the same price range check out the alesis mk2's and event tr5.

I agree with the Alesis mk2 recommendation. Bought a pair a couple of weeks ago and they are very clear and true. Great monitors!

I totally agree with the Alesis choise. I´ve had mine for a mounth now and they sound great!

There must be something wrong with my ears, my experience is that the sound from M-Audio BX-5 is very crispy and clear, and I and four other musicians compared it to Alesis mk2 side by side and BX-5 sounded better. It's very small monitors, but I have heard that it is lacking bass and a subwoofer would probably be a good acquisition later on.

Sounds better does not always mean a better monitor to mix on. My old Mackie 824s certainly sounded better than the Mk2's, but my mixes didn't translate well at all. The M1's may sound a bit more boxy in a direct comparison with others, but I think that may be one of their strengths in some strange way. Take them home and learn them and you're golden. As always, the room has a lot to with it. To each his own in the end....

I recently bought a pair of M1 Active MkII's, and my mixes have translated MUCH better than prior to plugging them into my 002. If you are operating on a limited budget, I recommend them. Although for an extra $100 USD, you can get a pair of Event TR-8N's. I have often wondered ...

You got that one right! Get what translates well, NOT what sounds good. Take them home and try them out while mixing. Better still, take 2 or 3 pairs home to try out, like I did, and keep the ones which translate the best after mixing. Don't be surprised if you surprise yourself, and forget that you ever even read this. All you need is your ears. btw just in case you are wondering, I bought some KRK V4s in the end.

I own the M-Audio Studiophile BX5s and have for a while. They're very impressive speakers, no doubt, as far as clarity, imaging, and sound stage. I am quite pleased with them, though I'm beginning to tire of the way my mixes don't always translate as well as I'd like. Don't get me wrong—they translate damn well—but not as well as the mixes I've done on buddies' Alesis M1 Active MkIIs. It's for this reason that I'm thinking of trading in my BX5s and snagging a pair of M1s.
