Default Why do i have to keep changing cache

Why do I have to keep changing my playback cache size. Sometimes right in the middle of a session. Not always but quite frequently I have to change it from 512 or 1g or 1gig to 512 when I first open a session. It's maddening I tell ya.

SETUP-PLAYBACK ENGINE-DISK PLAYBACK CACHE SIZE

It sounds much like when your session is 44.1k but you've got your hardware set to 48k. Crackles , sputters, plays too slow. hope that helps define the problem better.
Note to self, Don't post when you're frustration rules the moment. I should also mention that it never happened before I installed sonarworks, but even after I uninstalled it, it still happens.

And tell us what this playback cache is. I’ve never heard of it.

Same thing here on my M1 MacBook Pro. Not on my hackintosh.

Some bigger sessions when opening sound all wrong. Changing from 512 to 1024 and back to 512 solves the problem.

Some versions of Protools messed up the playback engine once it gave a cpu error. I think the delay compensation was messed up. The solution was to restart the session, but the quick fix was to change the hardware buffer (and back again if needed). It has nothing to do with the actual buffer but it's a fast way to reset some internal engine.

These bugs come and go as they please and maybe aren't fixed at all. It might not even be an issue depending on your session structure.

The crackles and sputters you mention I have also experienced, but only on non Avid playback devices. Again changing the buffer fixes it, but I don't think it has anything to do with the actual buffer.

I think it's an issue with multi client native interfaces. I've had the issue intermittently for years with several different interfaces. But never with HDX/HD Native.

I’ve had to change mine more than usual it seems lately after the last couple of updates. No big deal but I have a feeling it has something to do with a certain plug-in or plug-ins. Mdrummer comes to mind.

As far as "crackling" and having to switch between H/W buffers, I've had similar issues that I thought were particular to some 2022 PT versions.

What solved it for my system is to NOT apply the AVID Windows Optimization advice to set the minimum processor state to 100%. But rather, to 5%.
Setting only the maximum at 100%.

Most would advise otherwise, but I haven't had a glitch or error since switching back to that setting. And I'm running an older i5 (6th gen).
The processor still rises to the occasion & works effectively when necessary.
I've run some plug-in heavy sessions and things have been running smoother than ever.

When I had the minimum set to 100%, I was switching between buffer settings due to periodic crackling in my sessions.
After a few switches back and forth it would eventually go away.
I troubleshot for a while and finally this advice (setting minimum processor state to 5%) fixed it immediately. Haven't had any cracking or need to switch between buffers since.

If you are talking about the disk cache size, your 32GB definitely will allow to you to choose a higher setting at no great expense.
