Default Differences between using SCSI drives and Firewire drives ?

Hi guys
Does s.o. know if there is really performance alterations between using scsi or ide/firewire drives ?
There's so big price difference, I was just wondering how it could be true ... I already know there's less trackcount with ide drive . But for the rest ? is it as reliable as with scsi ones ? What about the performances ? Why do digidesign still recommends scsi drives in their "getting started" PT TDM HD manuals ?
Thanx in advance
