Please help - I want to buy a birthday present for my boyfriend who has the following type of equipment: Pro Tools LE (digi001), a good mic pre and microphone and a good compressor. He has mentioned that he wants some gear for drums for sampling and looping something in the line of battery?
The type of music that he is likes is pavement, stephen malkmus, tom waits, Smog, Beck and lots of funk and dance music (mostly french house). I don't have a price range in my head, neither do I have a clue about getting anything that fits his requirements. Basically, I want to get him something that makes me look like I know more about making music than he does, despite the fact that I don't know what any of his gear does and feign instant boredom when he starts talking about his music machines. Any advice or recommendations would be really appreciated - so thanks in advance... Enda |

Hey, if you ever break up....just kidding. Damn, that is cool that you want to give him some audio gear.
I agree with the gift certificate, unless you see him get pretty excited about a specific piece of gear. You should get him talking about it, and then start telling him somthing like, "yeah, but that $ is sooo out of the question"...and then buy it for him. That would make his decade. So, if you ever are single...DOH! Sorry. The reason a gift cert would be safer is because we (musicians/studio owners) are pretty picky, and he may have his eye on something but just not have let on yet. Good Luck! Martin |

Oh F***ing S***!!!
I wish I had such a girlfriend! Where are those women??? Anybody? Anyway, perhaps he could use a distortion stomp box to put some drumloops through. Just a thought. Greets Markus
