pro tools 11 stops recording during 96khz sessions with focusrite scarlett 18i20
I'm experiencing continous issues and incident during recording sessions with rate above 44.1khz/16bit.
I tried to record at 96khz (this is the sample I would use for my productions) , but pro tools repeatedly stuck recording after few moments. I'm going crazy trying to do everything to make a decent and continuos recording sessions. I've changed the asio buffer size in scarlett mix control (5, 3, 1, ms), I've tried to change the routing mode of mix control to ZERO LATENCY, I've set the windows recording and playback devices to the same rate of the mix control and of pro tools. In protools, cleared many times the preferences folder, tried to change the buffer size, but it seems impossible to slow down it under 1024 samples . In focusrite asio panel it happens the same stuff. But for me, it is impossible to work at Focusrite asio panel at 1024 samples and pro tools 1024 samples. TOO MUCH LATENCY FOR LIVE RECORDING ('ve simple tried to record three drums track at the same time. Clear pro tools preferences, installing beta drivers from focusrite and mix control from Focusrite beta, all the stuff. Please anybody knows the exact configuration path to record without issues or stuck for 1) scarlett mix control 2) playback and recording devicese in windows 7 3) pro tools playback engine 4) pro tools hardware setup. already contacted the focusrite support many times. thank you for helping Configuration system: windows 7 sp1 pro tools 11.3.1 scarlett mix control version 1.9.64.4 beta driver 3.1b8 firmware version 634 |

Re: pro tools 11 stops recording during 96khz sessions with focusrite scarlett 18i20
Can you post your full system specs? Have you gone through the Optimization Guide?
Be sure you dont have Windows set to use the 18i20 as it's default audio device, as any time a "Windows" sound plays it will break the connection between the 18i20 and your DAW. Recording at anything above 128 buffer will probably be too much latency. Anything over that is really only good for mixing. Personally, I don't see a need to record over 48000 sample rate, but that is a heavily debated topic I don't want to get into.. :) Joel

Hi Joel, thank you for the quick reply.
I've already checked all the passages in avid quick optimization guide before. this is my system configuration: Computer model: dell latitude e6540, intel core i74810mq @2,80 ghz OS version: windows 7 professional sp1 daw: focusrite scarlett 18i20, usb 2.0 connection Pro Tools version: 11.3.1 Amount of RAM installed: 16gb external device (where i manage pt sessions) : hdd WD my passport ultra 1TB usb 3.0 in playback/recording devices, windows7, i've previously unselected scarlett from default device. Hi ilmetallo,
Can you go to your device manger and click on the properties of the 18i20 and go the driver tab. Can you confirm what driver you are currently running? Also do get the same results when you disable the Scarlett in your windows sound preferences? |

My experience with a 6i6 using the latest released driver with Reason 8, Abelton Live 9 Lite (came free with the 6i6), and PT 12 is that the buffer size needs to be set with the Scarlett control panel to 10 ms for a 1024 sample buffer at 96 kHz. The DAWs' buffer settings don't control the 6i6 buffer sizes, they just read what is reported and try to adjust their buffer (# of sample) sizes accordingly as best they can. Pro Tools seems to calculate it properly, but won't run with that size buffer (it crashes). The other two DAWs don't have any problems. I'd be happy to provide additional information supporting these facts if anyone thinks that it's relevant/worthwhile. You would probably be surprised at how much more useful latency information is provided by those other DAWs!

HI amack, thanks for the reply. I'm continously trying to find the best configuration to work without stopping recording, Or playing, mano times during a session, for unplug the scarlet, Or pt11, Or rebooting. At this Point i would be peaceful even with a stable rec/play sessions at 48khz /24bit. Unfortunately changing my daw si not a godo option for me Right now. I'll try setting the ma as you suggest

I forgot to mention that you need to set the "ASIO Buffer Size" with "MixControl" before starting Pro Tools. Also, you would have more accurate latency compensation and likely much better luck with the smaller buffer sizes. (At least with them I was able to keep PT running long enough to do some latency tests!) It would also be wise to check what Pro Tools thinks the buffer size is (“Settings” – “Playback Engine”) so its latency compensation isn’t too far off. Good luck!

Another thing that might be worth trying. Close "MixControl" before you start recording/playback (and leave it off). That way Pro Tools shouldn't have to compete with "MixControl" when it needs to communicate with the device.
We feel your pain - good luck! Quote:
