Default Thrid Party Hardware

I have a beige g3 with plenty of memeory and storage. I just installed an Audiophile 2496. It works great until I launch ProTools 5.0.1. I read somewhere that 5.0.1 does support 3rd party hardware, but I can't seem to be able to record any audio. When I switch to built-in in the sound manager and use the mini-plug everything is fine except the quality of the recording. Any ideas, suggestions, advice. Any or all greatly appreciated.

You wrote: "I read somewhere that 5.0.1 does support 3rd party hardware...". Where have you read that! At this time, ProTools free 5.0.1 doesn't support any hardware.

This is written on CNET's Download.com.

Description
This is a free version of the popular Pro Tools for Mac. It features eight-channel audio (voices), two channels of I/O support via Wave Drivers/Sound Manager (allows compatibility with third-party hardware), and 48 MIDI tracks. It includes graphical edit and mixer windows similar to a professional studio console. Also, it sports a fully functional MIDI sequencer with graphic MIDI editing, a large number of MIDI options, and allows you to import and export standard MIDI files.

I think the proper quesion to ask is whether the 3'rd party hardware you are considering supports Apple's Sound Manager, as this is the only I/O option that is supported by PT Free.

Vince,
I have installed M-Audio's Audiophile 2496 in my Mac. With in sound manager, I can select the card and it sounds great. When I launch Pro Tools, everything goes to heck!
