Default 2024.6 VERY laggy and slow..

I just updated to 2024.6 from 2022.6 - finally took the plunge on renewing the 12 months of updates. Did a clean install.. installed all my plugins again from scratch with latest versions.

And wow it's laggy.. it seems to start off generally ok and then get gradually worse. to the point where I'm moving a fader and it jerks along behind the mouse. the audio playback etc is all fine though.

I just wondered if this version is known for being a bit crap, and maybe I should roll back a few?

____

I'm on the latest version of Windows.. AMD5950x CPU.. 3090 GPU so the graphics side of things should be fine.. 64GB RAM.. HDX card in a thunderbolt external chassis.

____

I've seen some comments about plugins affecting things.. surely that's not a program-wide thing? I feel like even clicking File and Open Session is a little slower than I'm used to.

I do have a couple of outdated plugins though, for example I'm still on Autotune 8.1 and also Line6 Echo Farm, which is defunct as of 2020 I think. I really do doubt it's those though.

I am also using UAD OCTO & QUAD Satellites, via Thunderbolt, I seem to have occasional computer meltdowns with this, where the whole system needs to be restarted and/or BSOD occurs.. so perhaps it's a fundamental incompatibility between UAD and Windows.. the USB version seems to be just as buggy with Windows from what I've read.

Hi,

Just a note that only Intel processors are supported at the moment.
Best to optimize computer for Pro Tools use.
You can check https://avidtech.my.salesforce-sites...oting/en367983 for more info

yeah I know that Intel but it's a bit of a non-issue tbh, I'm just wondering if this version is known for being a bit of a mess? I've been out of the loop since 2022.

and yes, all windows optimisations are in place

In general, no, that version is not known to be buggy or laggy.
Trying to find the source of your issue is probably going to take a little time since it requires starting with basically a clean PT install, with no plugins added and seeing how it performs. If things go okay, then you would typically reintroduce your plugins one at a time until you find the one that is causing the issue.

If your system doesn't run well even with a clean PT install, then you need to find the performance bottleneck in your system.

As in take the plugins physically out of the plugins folder or just start blank session and gradually start using more plugins until it starts getting laggy and then you know which one it is?

Take them out of the folder. PT caches them on start up, so even if you don't use it on a session, a troublesome plugin can still screw things up.
