Default Discussion on pro backup solutions

We're working on a major label project and have a pretty substantial TDM setup with 8 18-gig drives. Currently our mode of backup is to Exabyte using Retrospect.

Lately we've been getting a lot of errors. I was just wondering if anyone has suggestions for another porofessional means of doing daily backups. We've considered AIT, but have heard bad things about them as well. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Dopamine,

I've recently heard good reports of the DDS-4 drive from Hewlett Packard (the surestore 40e). I dont own one but am seriously considering it as backing up to CDR is taking way too much time.

It is already supported by retrospect via a driver update so I believe.

I suspect if you do a search on the DUC it will come up with a few results.

Good luck

Hey Dopamine, we use DDS4 with retrospect. So far so good. Speed is 6 gigs an hour. I think that's pretty fast. No errors with DDS4. I do get errors when using retro to archive to CD. So I use toast for that.

Rat

If you're only getting 6gig an hour on your DDS4 drive.. something's very wrong!! I can back up 6 gigs in about half that time... Unless you're talking about with verifying?

Retrospect gives me a report of about 174 MB/min on average.

I use an HP Surestore 40 on my 9600 internal SCSI chain.

I'm between 130 and 150 MB/min with verify. It seems to be functioning normally. But I'm always up for suggestions on how to make stuff faster!

Which drive do you own rat?

I've read somewhere that the HP Surestore 40 is faster than the Sony drive.

Do I have to keep calling you rat???

I've been having trouble with the AIT drives locking upon verification. It does not happen all the time though. Retropect (4.3) will go through the whole writing process, and stop when it begins verification. Has anyone else had this problem?
