Default Black Lion Signature Series Mod

Hi All,

Just got an email from Black Lion offering this set of mods. Might be interesting. Just thought I'd share!

Best

Yeah, that price is ludicrous.

LOL!! Check out their "Sound Samples" page... Apparently using the '002 signature series' on piccolo bass makes everything speed up substantially. That's some pretty bad clocking if you ask me.

That price is for the from stock to Signature price... If it really is a good mod - the tweakhead has been incredible for me - $1250 is not a bad price to pay (IMO)... Think of it as a little over $300/channel for 4 channels of great preamps alone, not to mention all the other improvements... One channel of any of the preamps they use on their comparison page will cost that much or more. If you've had it modded before from them, its only $475 - and with the online coupon 'til the end of this month, only $425.

Maybe that's BLA's particular 'coloring' for Piccolo bass, Slim! heh.

Yeah I got the HD mod for my 002 and love it. Would like to try this, but it's for rack models only. Oh well, I always wanted a rack unit for mobile recording. Guess I'll see what I can find on the used market.

Are any of you guys concerned that the 002 is losing its value extremely fast?

That's the main reason for me not even considering it . . . besides the $1250 price!

I can see that losing value could be an issue - but if the sound quality is fantastic, and if you've made other mods in the past (making the Sig Series mod much cheaper), I think that - as long as the 002 is still supported by Digi - the mods are still a great value. Even if you are buying the Sig Series as a first mod, a couple gigs will easily pay for the steeper price. Besides, if you're looking to build a good studio with high quality parts - and can resist the temptation to constantly upgrade gear (I fight it all the time), once you have a quality piece, who cares what its value is - except as it is able to facilitate you making your audio project a reality? I personally am making money with the rig I have, and until it breaks or Digi doesn't support the interface anymore, I don't see a need to sell or get rid of my 002 - but will upgrade it as needed to make it as competitive as possible. But this is also coming from someone who still drives an '88 Jetta and a '64 Beetle, so...

Of course, all that I'm saying assumes that this mod is in line, quality-wise, with their other offerings, and that the improvements are actually noticeable in people's ears, not just to a piece of analytical gear (and I can attest to the previous mods having truly noticeable differences over the stock 002)... If this assumption is right, its worth every penny, IMO. Remember, Digi is trying to design and have manufactured a product using components that allow it to put a price point on the 002 (and 003 for that matter) that many can afford - these, by economic necessity, will not be the top of the line components (Digi is not offering a boutique product). BLA offers to replace, where possible, the middle-of-the-line stock components with some of the best versions of the components they can, along with reconfiguring some of the design to optimize the unit in a way that Digi probably doesn't feel it can do on a mass-market basis. I think of BLA as being like the old coach-builders for cars - they took standard models and made the best versions of those models, using materials that would - if used in the standard version - make those models uneconomical to produce on a large scale basis, or for the market the companies intended to sell to...

Best

Nathan
