Default Can\'t create fades while in play (6.4)

I was enjoying the wonderful ability to hit 'F' whie playing and creating fades while in play only yesterday. Now I cannot !

Any ideas?

happened to me when i upgraded from LE to TDM. kind of a drag. not sure if it's something disabled now or not.
