Legacy Sequencers/Drum Machines and PT
I posted this originally on an old thread I found by Googling before I realized it was in the wrong place (ElevenRack subforum). SO here goes again...
Before the days of a DAW, I used to use a Roland R-70 (and before that, a SC Drumtraks), coupled to an Ensoniq ESQ-1 for sequencing and drums on demos. I still have all of the data dumps on cassette (yes, they're THAT old ) and/or RAM card, so it can all be dumped back into the devices. Lately, I've wanted to try to resurrect/re-work some of those old tunes, and in order to save myself some programing time, thought I could perhaps get that MIDI data into Protools (10) somehow. The question, is how? This was before the days of GM or .mid sequences, so I can't just import a file. Can I just "play" the tunes from the ESQ or R70/DrumTraks into PT over MIDI (and if so, how do I sync the tempo - does PT get "slaved" to the MTC/SMPTE of the Roland/Ensoniq?), or do I do a data dump from the devices and import that into PT? Help would be much appreciated. |

Re: Legacy Sequencers/Drum Machines and PT
If you are going to play the MIDI in why not play the audio in as well
Pro Tools can slave to MTC if you have the right hardware but I don't know what works currently you may want to also check over at Pro Tools Expert http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home...pro-tools.html

Re: Legacy Sequencers/Drum Machines and PT
Frankly, by today's standards, the audio kinda sucks. Very '80s-sounding keys, etc. I just want to save those sequences for posterity and maybe re-work the song.

Re: Legacy Sequencers/Drum Machines and PT
I would feed midi from the R70 to a midi track, put it in record and go. Since its a drum machine, it will(should) have a rock-solid tempo, so you can use the Identify Beat function to build a tempo map(always good to practice that one). But as said, you CAN tell Pro Tools to follow incoming midi time too(and likely you could feed MTC from the session into the R70 too)

Re: Legacy Sequencers/Drum Machines and PT
If you have the inputs I would record both the MIDI and audio into PT. Allbees idea with generating a tempo map is great as link as things are fairly simple.
There are many ways of locking this stuff up with hardware sync.
