Default OS 9.1 vs 8.6 and 001 competition

Coaster mentioned in an earlier thread that he was getting as good or better performance in 9.1 as in 8.6 on his machine, so I became curious.

My machine is an 8600/300 (Mach 5), with a Powerlogix G3 upgrade at 400 Mhz, 192MB RAM, many different HD's of varying size, an 001 and a Voodoo 3 for second monitor. All audio files are on a drive on my external SCSI bus, and it is the only device on that bus (my most stable config so far).

I usually run a separate 8.6 partition for doing PT, and 9.1 for office work/net access. I trimmed down my 9.1 partition to only necissary CPs and extensions, and made sure that everything was installed where it should be.

I then fired up a session with 13 tracks, 4 stereo auxes, and about 11 plug-ins, most simple eqs, comps, and gates, and a realverb, and a medium delay. This session was created under 8.6. PTLE 5.0.1.

When I opened the file under 9.1 I got the weirdest message . . . "A mixer connection could not be made. You have used up all available connections. Some signals may not be audible. Message ID=-7106."

I have never seen that one before. It popped up like 6 times, each requiring an OK, and then 6 random channels wouldn't play back (or in the case of auxes I assume they didn't get signal). It also said that some (usually three) of my plug -ins couldn't be created.

Upon trying to quit I got the -7106 error again and PT quit but DAE stayed launched, and I had to do a "Quit Anyway" with it.

This happened with all the Hardware buffer sizes, and all of the different processor settings I tried (between 65% and 85%).

The same session works fine under 8.6.

Of course here is the issues I have with 8.6 . . .

With a Hardware buffer size of 1024 I constantly get -9073 errors. With 128 and 256 I get a "remove some plug-ins" error (can't remeber the number right now), happens a lot sooner with 128 than with 256. And with 512 I will randomly get -9045 errors, but usually I can get a lot of work done, save right after the error pops up, quit and restart to work again with that one.

Any suggestions or ideas what is up with the -7106 under 9.1? Since it my first time with PT under 9.1 I am not sure where to start.

Thanks in advance.

shawn-
we seem to have similiar machines.

i have:

8600/300 w/ g3 400/200/1 (newertech)
224 ram
ixmicro ultimate rez

os 8.6 and 9.1

9.1 runs pro tools better than 8.6 on my rig.

i do not know why; 9.1 is slower all around than 8.6 otherwise.

i have never heard of the errors you describe.

i usually run at 256 buffer/setup

DAE setting "2"

i always had to run at 1024 with out the newertech card.

now i can run 128 for the most part, but 256 is better for me.

guess we will see if anyone cares to respond.

did you see my goofy 3 monitor setup a link or two below?

Yeah Coaster, I checked out that pic. Pretty cool. I am constantly forgetting that you can use the video out to drive a separate monitor.

Sorry to hear about the flooding, 75 inches! Eeek.

Luckily my room is on the second floor. I may have some pics of it soon so we can share.

I got brave, backed up my 8.6 partition, and did a clean install of 9.1 over it, removed any non-essential components, then moved the needed stuff over from the old system folder.

Much better. None of the wacky previous problems. I think that the -7106 mixer issues may have come from having a sound manager extension from QT 5 floating around even though I have reverted to QT4.1.2.

I had to put my DAE buffer on '4' to get my file to work, and so far I typically must use 1024 in PT, but it is working as well as 8.6, with a lot less -9045 errors. I only got one, and that was while I was playing around with different buffer settings.

I have to say thanks to coaster as I would've never tried this without his input, and it seems to greatly reduce my -9045 problem (I used to get them every 8-10 minutes requiring a quit and restart).

Shawn,
You work at Krannert? That's awesome. I've performed and recorded there many times with my High School bands and orchestras. I LOVE that hall, it must be sweet to work there.

I am actually in charge of reinforced events at Krannert. The hall is kinda messy for PA unless you get like Meyer or EAW stuff, kinda pricey, especially since we must import it.

If you are into PA gear and in town come and check out Music for Airports only at 6PM next Friday, we will have a D&B Audioteknik system in from Cleveland, real cool stuff.

i still think its very bizzare you were getting errors like that.

could it be possibly proc accel related?

did you get the errors before the upgrade?

glad its working better, although i dont understand why.
