Issue with PT11 recording some VI's
Hi,
I had an issue where PT11 did not seem to find/recognize the VI's of XLN's Addictive Drums and UVI's Workstation. By accident I realized why - they are both considered "stereo" plugins and will only be found in the "multichannel plug-in"menu for stereo audio track inserts, an option not given for mono audio, aux or instrument tracks. However - the real problem: I can't seem to find a way to properly record these VI's. I've tried recording the track by enable record and play with my MIDI keyboard, but the stereo track won't take it. I've found that sending the signal from the stereo track to an AUX track (say bus out 1-2 in "send" for stereo and input for AUX set to that bus) and setting output from AUX to Bus 3 (I only get the mono option) and use that bus for input on the original stereo track with the VI plugin. Now when I record, the signal does get through - the volume meter is responding and there are wave peaks forming on the recording track. BUT! I can't for the life of me get this clip to play. When I hit play after recording, it's dead silent and showing no life on the volume meter. The above method is the only way I've found to get somewhere. It's a bit clumsy, and more to the point, doesn't actually get all the way there (as silent recordings are fairly useless). Does anyone know a way to do this right ? TLDR - How do you record a VI on a stereo audio track ? Btw - am currently updating PT11 with the 11.0.2 patch, though a brief perusal of the patch notes does not suggest my problem is one of their fixes. Cheers ! :) |

Re: Issue with PT11 recording some VI's
Providing the VI's you're using are compatible with PT11, you should have the option to instantiate the VI on an Instrument rack. Then create a send on a stereo bus from the instrument track to the corresponding bus input on a stereo Audio track. Record enable the Audio track and away you go.
If you want to record Midi 'Live' onto the Instrument track, record enable that track simultaneously.

Re: Issue with PT11 recording some VI's
As the plugins are able to load in PT11 on stereo tracks (and works fine, except from recording), and their sites says they have AAX platforms I'll assume they are compatible.
Yes, that's how I'd usually do it (that or a MIDI track linked to an Instrument track). The thing is, I can't find those VI's in and Instrument tracks plugin list. I click plugins, find "Plugins-Instruments" - they are not there. However, on a stereo track you get the two menus "multichannel plugin" and "multi-mono plugin". The VI's (XLN's Addictive Drums and UVI Workstation) are not listed in "multi-mono - instruments" but are listed in "multichannel - instruments" (with "(stereo)" added after their names). It seems as these VI's are only stereo and won't work in a (mono) instrument track. They are playable and audible in the stereo track, but won't record/their recordings are silent (despite wave peaks are shown on the recorded file). |

Re: Issue with PT11 recording some VI's
If you're trying to record the actual midi info so that it plays back, you need to not only record arm the instrument track, but hit record and play on the master transport as well, just like you do when you record onto an audio track.

Re: Issue with PT11 recording some VI's
As for the fact that they're only stereo tracks, if you want to record the drums individually, what you would normally do is create mono audio tracks for each of the individual drums, and stereo tracks for the overheads and rooms, and buss the outs of Addictive Drums to these individual tracks. See the manual for how to do this.

I'm not very experienced with this software, so I'm sorry if you're actually giving me the answer and I'm not getting it... But hey, I've found something - bussing the stereo audio track with the loaded instrument to a MONO audio track does work to record it - and plays back as well. Not to elegant I'll say, but it works for now :) |

Any stereo instrument should load no problem on a stereo instrument track. If you want to record the audio output of that instrument track just route the output of the track to a stereo audio track, record enable both the Instrument and Audio tracks and hit Record Enable and Play in Transport and you should be good to go. Or you could use a send from the Instrument track to the stereo Audio track. |

Re: Issue with PT11 recording some VI's
Skybreak, are you saying that the plugin will not even load on a stereo instrument track, only stereo audio tracks?
