nice question dude. i got a job a few weeks ago to do the same thing to a hip hop track (school teacher, sing-a-long, don't ask)

use Waves C4 multiband. you can pull the range way down on the 3rd band works great. or eliminate the mid range altogether (bypass) and lay different stuff on top to fill in hole.

if you don't have waves use another multi band.

Try this...Import your stereo file onto two mono tracks. Do not pan the two tracks, keep them center. Flip the phase on one of the tracks using the digirack eq plugin...It's the 0 symbol with the line through it if you wern't sure. Doing this drops everything from the center, usually what is common to both the left and right. Unless the vocals were panned off center, this works well, Downside is you usually lose some kick and snare too. Good luck
