Default Bad Practice

Recently I bought an extra year of support and updates on what is now a perpetual Pro Tools studio license from the UK. When I looked at the Avid renewal price, it didn’t seem right at all.

In the Avid account they wanted to charge me over £190, but it is only $199. After buying it from a third party I ended up paying under £160 with audiodeluxe making a fair deal. Why are Avid so clearly abusing the exchange rate?

It's pretty usual for resellers to have licenses at lower prices than the vendor. I'm guessing this is to encourage people to ask pre-sales and post-sales questions from their local reseller.

As an example, I just bought Studio 4 -> 5 upgrade from Thomann for £105. Bought directly from Presonus it's £126. Both include all applicable taxes etc.

For reference, my Ultimate (Perpetual) yearly support is £390.80 p.a. from Avid and my PT Standard (Perpetual) support is £190.40 p.a.

Avid aren't the only software company that ignore the exchange rate.
Why they do, I have no idea?
We just have to shop around.

VAT might account for the difference?

Maybe you're right Dave, but you don't have to pay VAT in buying directly from the US. I wonder if they pay local tax on the $199 if bought there.

The shake up in perpetual licenses has got me looking for problems elsewhere

nothing has changed ... perpetual owners still pay 199.00 ... been a few years now .. YES, the rub is, no longer being able to buy a perpetual license .. be happy you have one !! otherwise it would be 299.00 per year !!

I am thinking about a reinstatement CODE and hold it this time ... last round, I let plan Lapse, then reinstatement CODE from 3rd party ... in the end it work out to be just about the Same as paying the 199.00 all along .. they have us People !!

I use Logic and Love it ... PT only when need to ... and troubling shooting for others ..

cheers and make a wise choice for your situation !!
