Default fixing mouth noises (smacks, clicks)

Good morning everyone:

A friend of mine sent me a 10 minute VO recording of his dad, asking me to edit a few flubs. The recording isn't bad, but there are a lot of audible and distracting mouth noises (clicks, lip smacks). I told him that ideally he would re-record his dad but beforehand make sure his dad drinks water, maybe place the microphone in a different position etc., but for a variety of logistical reasons that isn't really an option.

I read here that you can actually fix this in post:

http://filmsound.org/QA/mouthclick.htm

By "volume graphs", Randy Thom means very small adjustments in the volume so as to suppress the smacks, right?

Someone recommended Sonic Solutions declicker plugin. I have iZotope's RX3 myself, might that be helpful?

I've been out of the "audio world" for a couple of months (swamped by my day job) so my PT skills are slightly rusty. This is a favor for a friend so I don't want to spend a lot of money on new plugins, I have a few weeks to fix it.

Many thanks for any thoughts / suggestions.

RX3's declicker is your friend.

I would say, there is no "automatic" way to remove such sounds. 10 minutes is not that much (compare this, to even one reel of a movie....).

As RecRoom says RX is a good tool to do the job.

For such things even ProTools' pencil is a good friend. Just go click after click and try to remove it.

But you need to spend some time on it.

Best,
Kuba

Agreed. The only sure and safe way of dealing with mouth sounds from intimate recordings is the old manual remove/replace/redraw. Tedious but necessary.

Izotope RX's Spectral Repair module will be your friend. I think first I'd try the Declicker to see if you could automatically remove some and lessen the amount of time you'll spend with Spectral Repair.

best,
rich

Depending on the type of click you might want to try:
RX3 declick audiosuite, "Random clicks" (not single band), strength 5 - 8

Usually a good starting point for me.
Spectral repair is great for the ones you can't get rid of, and a little more time-consuming of course.

Hope you get the desired result!
Best, Andrew

I find decrackle better for blanket de clicking and declicker for more specific clicks ect.

You just have to experiment with the decrackle setting to find a good overall setting that doesn't effect the quality.
