Default 1622 running in a 24bit-session!?

Hi Members,

I was wondering if it is possible to run 24-bit sessions in LAP with a 1622-interface connected, even though interface itself is only 20-bit.

Cheers,
Boogie

from the manual which can be found here :
1622 manual

Quote:
The 1622 I/O
is a 16-channel digital audio
interface which features 20-bit analog-
to-digital, and 24-bit digital-to-analog
converters for superior dynamic range, reduced
noise floor, and the capability to
work with the full 24-bit mixing, editing,
processing, and mastering environment of
Pro Tools.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">One ambiguity however is whether 1622 S/PDIF I/O is 16 or 24 bit. If 16 bit then 16 bit dither on the output fader will be necessary if you use S/PDIF

ok, link does not work.

Well, if you are using the analog inputs... can you then record at 24bits in Logic/Protools?

sorry, link has been corrected, it should get you to the manual

otherwise all manuals are here :

www.digidesign.com/support/docs/

with analog inputs what you will get is 24 bit digital words going from the interface to Pro tools/logic, but carrying 20 bit resolution audio, which is perfectly fine for many uses, as long as you are not recording stuff with great dynamic range like classical music...

However if you have not bought one yet, you may consider using an adatbridge24 combined with third party converters to get comparable amount of inputs but with greater quality conversion

This said 1622 is undoubtedly a good deal

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the info.

One more thing.. are the converters very 'harsh' ... I am thinking of using it for FX returns mostly.

Cheers,
Boogie

I would not describe the converters as harsh but rather as a bit "dry", that is, with less spatial depth and width than Apogee hardware for example, and not really impressive in the low freqs.

Further problem with fx returns like reverb, is that it is low level *and* with a lot of spatial information : just the kind of audio that begs for good quality conversion.

But again, it all depends on what your expectations are, but with the 1622 we are still speaking of pro equipment!
