Because they're trying not to go out of business and they can't make any money unless (and even if apparently) they sell you their expensive hardware that you don't want or need.

That certainly is a big element. Logic X is tied to Mac hardware which you can discount since a computer is needed. -- but only partially discount Mac, since non-Hackintosh Macs have a cost premium above PC. So if you de-emphasize most of the computer difference and compare a Logic X rig w/ an Avid PT11 Native Omni rig (which you'd have to do since Logic has things like compression meters and other HD-like features) --- the costs are still showing Avid as quite a bit higher. Hardware is a good part of that.

Clearly for Apple, Pro Apps like FCPX and Logic Pro X are loss-leaders: they aren't bread & butter to their bottom line the way PT and MC are to Avid. So the day Avid brings PT HD solutions in line w/ other DAW solutions pricing is just never.gonna.happen.

I really do like Logic's compositional workflow, and I can even tolerate its editor -- but i/o routing & tracking/mixing in PT is more straight-forward and will always gets the nod from engineers. That plus the studio DSP dominance is here to stay for a long while -- Apple has zero interest in selling DSP interface and controller solutions, in 2010-2013 I bet iOS devices probably made more in 30 seconds than Logic 9 did in 30 days.

But Logic does have an easy path thru home/bedroom studios, which can translate generationally (if Apple keeps updating it) to younger folk insisting it come along with them to the studio. But...even then, Avid's heavy investment in creating "turn-key" high DSP/tracking solutions for studios makes Logic pretty much hemmed in...plus PT11 is awesome and that moves the ball forward for Avid for awhile to come. If Avid can just stay profitable and in business without having to shop itself around.

Logic X is really great for composing / production. I find it way more effective in that regard than PT 11. However, PT still rules for mixing IMO.

Right now though - simply due to plugin support, I would suggest going for Logic X over PT 11. PT 11 is fantastic, but needs 6 - 12 months for AAX to become more prevalent.

Of course one could replace Apple with Avid, and Logic with ProTools find yourself addressing a similar sized bunch, no?

I concede that point! Just remove the word 'sized' from my statement.
