PT 8.0.3 import conversion problem

Case 1: I have just experienced a conversion problem when i imported some audio to PT HD 8.0.3. I imported two 4416 wav and four 4824 wav(stereo) into a 4824 wav session in one go. The 4416 tracks are converted perfectly while the 4824 ones are NOT!!!! They sound like a 4824 being played back at 4424. The files are longer than they should be and of coz they are pitched down....I dont understand why importing a 4824 wav to a 4824 session can cause such trouble!!! I have to re-import it...I cant believe an industry standard program cannot convert a file properly!!! (I didnt drag them from finder...I used command-shift-i)

Case 2: This happened 1 year ago when I was still using PT6.9. I have got some files from a producer to replace some tracks on the session to mix. The producer always bounces all his tracks in the length of the song. I drag them from finder and found all new tracks in different length. After re-importing using "Import Audio", they all converted correctly.

I guess this has something to do with elastic audio....
The files are time stretched......

Anyone got the same problem?

Hi,

It could be these audio files contain meta data? where did these files come from? some DAW's embed data like rex/acid so them will come into PT as elastic audio tracks.

There are prefs that effect how these files are imported!

This seems to be a repeatable bug!
I can confirm it on 2 x 8.0.3 systems and that it doesn't happen on 2 x 8.0.1 systems. I am downloading 8.0.4 now to see if this is fixed.
This bug affects importing multiple sample rates using the Import Audio command and does NOT happen using Drag & Drop.

Try this test with Pro Tools HD 8.0.3 (can't test LE here):

Take an audio file and export it twice using quicktime pro: once as a 48k file and once as a 44.1k file. Label the files accordingly. Play the files in QT to make sure they sound the same. Import the files using the Import Audio command. They will be different lengths and play back at different speeds and different pitches. Then import the same files using Drag & Drop. They will be the same length and playback exactly the same.

This doesn't happen on 8.0.1 or on 7.x as far as I can tell.
Can anybody else confirm this is a bug?

UPDATE
I just installed 8.0.4 and the bug persists. No change in behavior.

Also, here are some system specs:

System 1:
MacPro 2 x 2.66 Dual Intel Xeon, OSX 10.6.3, 3GB RAM, Pro Tools HD1, Pro Tools HD 8.0.3cs1, then 8.0.4

System 2:
MacPro Nehalem 2 x 2.26 Quad Intel, OSX 10.5.8, 8GB RAM, Pro Tools HD3, Pro Tools HD 8.0.3cs1

System 3:
Mac G5 Dual 2.0, OSX 10.5.8, 2.5GB RAM, Pro Tools HD1, Pro Tools HD 8.0.1cs2

System 4:
Mac G5 Dual 2.3, OSX 10.5.8, 5GB RAM, Pro Tools LE MBox2, Pro Tools LE 8.0.1cs2


The problem occurs on systems 1 & 2 which have 8.0.3/8.0.4 installed, and does not happen on systems 3 & 4 which have HD 8.0.1cs2 & LE 8.0.1cs2 respectively. Also, I have done all the standard troubleshooting steps, trash prefs, restart, repair permissions, etc.

I have been getting this problem too - you need to import audio files that have different sample rates from each other by using separate "Import Audio" procedures, otherwise some will play back at the wrong speed.

Not sure when this problem cropped up, but it doesn't have anything to do with elastic audio.

Digi,
Any chance this could get slated for a fix? This is a real problem in a fast paced workflow with many elements coming from different sources. Pro Tools accidentally pulling up/down tracks on import without alerting the user is reminiscent of the FCP import bug. Let's keep Pro Tools "Pro" and not slide downwards toward Final Cut "Amateur".
