Record to internal drive?
I searched for this but couldn't find what I'm looking for, which I'm surprised it's not asked more.
I currently have a pretty old Mac, running a pretty old version of PT, and I'm looking into getting everything current. I saw a video today with Mitch Gallagher from Sweetwater talking about the new MacBook Pro M1Max. I know that that will have Monterey which isn't supported yet. But he said that he recorded everything to the internal drive. With the version of PT that I use, Avid recommends using an external drive. Has this changed? I thought they still recommended this, or maybe it's different now with SSD. Anyone have some input on this? Thank you! Paul

Re: Record to internal drive?
It’s actually been talked about a LOT on this forum.
No. If you have one of those new machines, recording to the internal drive will yield better results than an external as the drive speed is VERY fast. Unless space is an issue, go for it. With that in mind, maxing it out the internal drive would be wise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: Record to internal drive?
Thank you. Yeah, I thought that would have been discussed a lot. Maybe the way or key words I used to search limited the results.

Re: Record to internal drive?
Btw. this "new" means that since 2013 MBP/MP internal drive has reached gigabyte speeds, and the new Apple Silicons have about 3.5GB/sec performance.
Google NVMe SSD and you get the idea.

Re: Record to internal drive?
I'm really looking forward to it. Just about anything would be lightning fast compared to what I currently have.

Re: Record to internal drive?
Where it works is when the internal drive is an SSD and not a spinner

Re: Record to internal drive?
Think about it; typical read/write speed of a 7200rpm spinner drive would be around 70Mb/s - my internal on a 2018 mac mini is about 2500Mb/s! And the M1 macs even faster. It means alot to the performance. Everything is faster, startup, launching, copying, backup and so on.
BTW, the search function on this forum sux. Use google instead; like this: searchword site:duc.avid.com All search results will be filtered to show only hits on this site. (Also works on any other site.)

Re: Record to internal drive?
Not only that, but spinners had latency (seek time) of about 10 milliseconds whereas SSD latency is less than 100 microseconds (0.1 milliseconds). It means you can store all your session files in one SSD without thinking, or at least 100X file count that made your spinner cause trouble.

Network speeds (LAN and WAN) are generally measured in bits, storage transfer rates are usually measured in Bytes. Just for added confusion, memory transfer rates are also usually quoted in Bytes. Dominic |

I do know the difference between bytes and bits. I just wasn't aware that B=bytes, and b=bits.
