Unlike the posters on this board who seem to
be studio owners at the pro or semi-pro level, I am considering a Digi001 as an alternative to the Roland VS-880. Anyone with VS-880 experience - I'd love to get your comments. I am computer literate (I use both Macs and PCs with Photoshop, etc.), but not super studio savvy. I am worried about the learning curve I'll need to go thru with the Digi. Any thoughts?

I own both a VS-880 and I also have a Pro Tools TDM system. Pro Tools is much, much, much better for editing and for plug-ins. The VS-880 has some cool effects, esp. if you add the expansion board. But overall, they are really 2 totally different things.. Digi 001 is much more versatile and expandable.

In all honesty, I find it much easier to use Pro Tools than my VS-880. If you are computer savvy (Photoshop, Mac, PC, etc) you will have absolutely no problem with Pro Tools. You will be much happier with Digi 001. Digi 001 comes with Pro Tools LE. It's extremely impressive.. Don't worry about the learning curve, you'll learn it REAL FAST..

I have worked recorded a number of things on my VS-880 and just recently purchased the digi001 PT v.5.0. My problem is that I can't seem to sync the two up. I want to use PT as the master clock to transfer tracks from the 880 into PT. Any suggetions?

i went from 880 to 001 just last month. I do this for a living and I was warned of a learning curve of about 4 days. Well to really become ready to charge people, took more like 4 weeks. But, the quality of sound and the 16 extra tracks are worth it!

If you're really looking at an 880, be careful. It (at least the 880 anyway, I don't know about the newer ones) writes to disk at 8 bits. The reason they claim that it's uncompressed is that it uses a program table to store the extra parts of the words that are similar - it writes the first eight to disk and then does this table deal. It reassembles them at playback. To me, this qualifies as compression. I asked a Roland rep about it years ago when the thing first came out, and he would not admit it. He conceded every point excepting the word "compression". Anyway, at a much more robust 24 bits in the 001, you'll be much better off. And at least that way, you don't have to buy their bullcrap $70 57' for their COSM mic modeler....

Sean , funny what you say about the roland
and it's 8 bit "feature". It wounld't surprise me if the 1680 were similar. I've
had clients record their songs in those, then
come to the studio to do vocals.(record into
the 1680) The difference between what went in
and what came out was night and day.

I had a VS880... and then I got the VS1680... and now I have the Digi 001...

All great tools... but the Digi 001/Pro Tools LE is so much more user friendly when it comes to editing/mixing...

I did however keep my 1680 for road use... as far as sound quality goes... they are all comparable... but remember that u are getting alot more when you buy the Digi (24 tracks, midi sequencer, etc)

Do the Digi-

I hated all the stinkin menus you had to go thru on the Roland stuff- all those menus are far worse than mousing on a 17 in monitor- my next buy's going to be a motormix!

A VS is fine for recording on the road or for impromptu ideas where you can't take your DAW, but that's it!
