Default Disk Utility ?

I'm about to erase an external FW drive (for the first time), and I'm slightly confused about what drive icon to choose. I only have 2 drives (my MAC internal drive, and an OWC FW external drive). When I open Disk Utility there are 4 drive icons. The first one says 60 GB IBM-, then directly under that to the right says Macintosh HD. The second one says 80 GB Oxford, then under that says OWC Mercury. This is the one I want to erase, but what icon do I choose? I would assume it's the last one that says OWC Mercury, but I want to make sure before I make a stupid mistake. Thanks for any help.

each drive has two icons I don't know why but if you try to select the wrong one ( excluding the internal hd ) you'll find it doesn't have that option just don't pick one og the top two

the top one is the whole drive, the one under it is your volume ( even if it is not partitioned) choose the one under for utilities control.

Thank you for the reply. Both icons for the FW drive give me the choice to ERASE them. I think I'm gonna go w/ the last one. Hope I'm right! Thanks again.

You can choose either the one that says "80GB Oxford" or whatever volume name is listed under it. As a previous poster stated, the program lists drives first by their manufacturer/size/connection, then lists volumes that have been created on that drive underneath it. If you were to format a drive into more than one partition, multiple volume names would show up 'underneath and to the right' of the name of the affected drive.
