What's your most common sample rate / bit depth?

Just curious as to what you normally turn to? I'm recording a heavier rock / metal band soon w/ the 002/R and the Octopre. I usually go for 44.1k / 24bit, but this project is being mixed / mastered at different studios, so I opted to go w/ the higher sample rate (48k). I've been reading that if your gonna just be in the box for the whole project, and bouncing to disk for cd's, you should just stay at 44.1 / 24, because the conversion quality will degrade the sound more so than just recording at a lower sample rate to begin with. Is this true? Also, if you have multiple sessions at different sample rate's / bit depth's, does it tax your hard drive more so than consistent one's? Thanks in advance for any input.

I stick to 44.1/24 if I plan to end up at 44.1/16. I dont use 48 often unless I plan to use it for something other then CD, and I plan to move from studio to studio. I use 96k even less often, because a few places I mix don't support it yet.

Almost all of the projects I see for mastering are still 24/44.1. The only (occasional) exceptions are classical or acoustic-oriented music, which are sometimes at 24/96.

If you are going to have your project mastered or mixed in the analog realm, I usually recommend going 24/48, as the “sample rate conversion” issue becomes irrelevant once a signal is analog again.

If everything will stay in the box the entire time; 24/44.1.

Really though, the main quality factor around these issues is the quality of the AD/DA converter itself. For example, a HEDD 192 sounds WAY better (to me) at 16/44.1 than anything from Digidesign working at any depth/rate.

I can’t imagine having separate sessions at different depths/rates on the same drive will make any difference what-so-ever.

So you all might agree 24 bit depth is the rule, sampling rate is for your Taste,

I personally stick to 48kHz with my 001 since the sample accuracy is higher, latency is less (handbook)and I also like to use the additional "headroom" of more properly representation of higher frequencies. Personally when using sonicworx to post master it finally to 44.1/16 the results are more pleasant the anything.

multiple format sessions on one drive will exactly do nothing to each other or the drive consistency.

Technically it may be higher, but it provides no practical advantage.

There is no additional "headrooom" running at a higher sampling rate...
