Question Which Interface?

Now that Pro Tools 9 can use any interface, I'm wondering if I'm putting the equipment I own to the best use.

I have an Eleven Rack that I've been using as my main interface, but I also have a MOTU 8 Pre, a MOTU Ultra Lite, and an MBox 2.

Where do you think I'd get the best A/D conversion? The MOTU's?

I also have a Mackie mixer with the VLZ3 preamps. Better than the preamp in the Eleven Rack?

It just gets confusing wondering how best to hook it all up when it's all sitting here.

You have all of this in front of you! You are probably the best person to make that decision- use your ears : )

Why do you even have all of this stuff? Who sold it all to you lol? Sounds like you were robbed...

I think I'd sell everything(except the 11rack) and get a Focusrite Saffire 56. Looks like a great option for PT9 users that aren't spoiled by the 003 controller(I haven't decided yet if I can live without the functions on that baby).

@albee - that's exactly the kind of advice that he's been getting and how he ended up with so many interfaces lol... the Focusrite thingy is probably no better or worse than any of the ones he has... I say he should be making music not running an audio interface museum...

I'd love to have some more information about what he's doing instead of giving him advice on what interface to use blindly...

My recommendation is based on A-getting rid of all the other stuff, and B-taking advantage of the new RTAS feature that Focusrite is bringing out in January. http://www.focusrite.com/us/protools9

They're just all interfaces I've bought for different reasons and systems over the past 5 years or so. I started with the MOTU UltraLite when I was using Sonar. Needed more inputs, so I bought the MOTU 8 Pre. Wanted to learn Pro Tools a few years back so I bought the MBox 2. The Eleven Rack....well I'm a guitar player. So I didn't get robbed....I had reasons for all of them.

I hate to sell things because SO many times in the past I've sold something only to wish I had it back at some point later on. Also I have two places where I record, and two systems set up.

I guess I'm really wondering if the converters in the MOTU's are supposed to be better than the Eleven Rack. I never thought about it before because I couldn't use them with Pro Tools. But now I can.

You could do a test to compare them. Especially if you have a hardware synth to use. You could program a midi performance, controlling the synth, and have the synth go line in to each interface. That way it's the exact same performance, so you won't be biased.

I understand now- I just have seen a lot of examples where folks bought all sorts of gear unnecessarily. I think you are in the best position to determine what is best for you, do some shootout tests where you play a recording you know is good through the various interfaces, and also record the same signal through each interface. I'm kinda betting that you're not going to hear enough of a difference and that if you continue to use your AVID interfaces you'll get stunning results...

Use the 8pre as your main interface, plug in eleven rack VIA spidif. Sell all others. Thats what i would do.

Hi there,

i'm looking for informations about the interface "AVID PRE". Does anyone have already tested it ? I want to use it in a foley / ADR studio. Everybody speak about Neve, Studer but they are much more expensive.
Thanks.

Philippe.
