Default MacBookAir or Pro For Dialog Editing?

Hey Guys,
I want to start bringing some of my work home. Just for dialog editing.
Also got a teaching gig once a week and would like to bring my Mac with me.
For basic Dialog editing and maybe some other sound work what can anyone recommend. I'd prefer not to buy the top of the line...but something that works.

Any suggestions?

BTW how do I make the Title for my post in bold letters? Only been a member for around 10 years...thought I should find out.

Thanks
Mitch

Hey Mus,

I currently use a Mac Book pro thats about 3 years old for dialogue editing (10.7.4 and Pro Tools 10.3). I made sure it had a 7200 rpm drive in it (faster than the 5400 standard at the time) and plenty of ram. Need to be sure the video can keep up when running everything off the main drive. Also helps to have a separate mouse as the trackpad can be a pain after a while. And a good set of closed back headphones for non-studio locations. And maybe a good set of small speakers for your classroom. My wife's macbook air is also about 3 years old. It has a lot of trouble keeping up with even basic tasks. Its not made to handle pro apps. I don't know if the newer ones are better, but its made to be small and light first so i'd stay away from it.

cheers

You might want to buy a keyboard (or at least an additional num-block). I'm painfully slow with only the macbook-keyboard.

Thanks guys you made some excellent points. Had a mac Book around 10 years ago and editing with a track pad sucks! Already have a good set of cans. It's an audio engineering school so they are set with speakers and Projector.

What about the bold type?

M.

BTW the Air only clocks in at 1,8 GHz...not great.

How about a Mac mini, or Mac mini server instead?
Easy to carry around.

Not sure if SSd's are qualified yet, though pretty sure they are... int hat case, forget spinning disc and just go with that. super fast r/w times.

also, pro is expandable, upgradeable and comes with more ports / disc drive. don't want the optical slot, convert it to second drive.

but, i'd stay clear of the retina, overpriced and totally locked to HD and ram (not upgradable)

I have Mac Book Pro and had to edit dialogs while abroad.
My biggest issue was that I felt the lack of external TV for picture reference. Having both, the session with some open plugins e.g RX2 AS or NoNoise AS together with the picture on the same screen is a PITA.
I never insert plugins when dialog editing so no problem with CPU limitation.
I used external keyboard and mouse.
Also a built in audio is very poor and I heard it through my Sennheiser HD25 hp. I consider to buy SD USBPro2 for that purpose.
I have the 13 inch model and frankly its a bit small for that. Maybe 17 inch may make sense for this situation.

Thumbs up Re: MacBookAir or Pro For Dialog Editing?

I've got the 2.66gHz i7 Mac Book Pro as my main system, and I'm still constantly amazed at how much I can do with it. I've done things from smaller feature mixes to TV shows and spots on it with no major complaints. I have it attached to a 24" LCD and use an external keyboard and trackball, with audio I/O via a MOTU 828mkII. I've done some on-the-go editorial with just the MBP and a pair of headphones and it's worked out great as well, letting me to tracklays and such wherever I am.
