Default A good options for monitors?

I'm thinking about getting a pair of behringer (sp?) monitors, don;t know if they have a few different models or not but i'm looking the pair for about $1000 aus ($500 us?). Is this a good move or is there a better set for around this mark? the only other thing that's been suggested to me for a similiar price are the revolution note-perfects - which are not self powered.

what do you guys use / reccommend?

For cheaper than that ($379), musiciansfriend.com has a Tannoy Proto J Plus monitor/Hafler TA1100 power amp package.

In that article he talks about seeing lots of appraisel for Tannoy Reveals yet found he didnt like them which I guess illustrates the need to go and listen to a few pairs for yourself.

I personally quite like my reveals - I dont think I can argue about the price performance ratio.

I own the Tannoy 800A--8" system, and the TANNOY's are the purest listening field, because the hi's are directly alligned with/in the lows...

The ONLY speakers that gives you a Pure frequency grouping/allignment...

With all other speakers...your ear might be hearing More hi's or more low's, depending the placement of your head at any given moment...

Don't forget, your Acoustical Enviornment, and actual placement of the speakers in your studio will be almost as big a factor as the speakers.

I would suspend them if possible, at least get them away from direct reflection of a mixer or table...

Suggestions are ok, but everyone has fav's for different reasons, and monitors are very high on the list. They are the critical link between you and what youa re recording. I suggest you find a dealer that has a no hassles return ploicy, so you can audition as many monitors as you want in your studio. Listening to them in some store display is no way to judge how they will work in your room.

Develop a relationship with a good Pro Audio (not music store) dealer, and try monitors two paiar at a time, and take back the one you like least, get another pair, and repeat until you find what you like.

Don't buy into sales hype and "specs", let your ears in your room be the judge. Only then will you know how they work for your particular needs and tastes.

FWIW, my monitors of choice are Yamaha NS-10-M and Gelenec 1030A's, along with (in the lounge) Kenwood powered KLH with sub, (in my office)Sony boom box, (mostly) stock toyota indash stereo (added subs)....but I spend 95% of my mixing time on the crappy sounding, dreaded, loved/hated NS-10's, because, for me, that's what works. For me, that's all that matters.

Hope this is helpful.
