So will the maxed out ram compensate for the process speed?I don't have to have the dell but that's the only company that still has xp models, every other company has vista pre-installed on there pc's.

You will see a little more muscle with added ram but my best advice would be to get at or above the 2.0ghz processor point with as much ram as you can afford especially if you use soft synths and a lot of plugins.

A 1.6GHz PC will not benefit from more ram. 2GB is already overkill for anything except a 3GHz+ dual core or a quad.

1.6 GHz is manageable, depending on your needs. You'll have to describe for us what you hope to do and what plugs you use. For example, if you're using convolution reverbs, you'll be able to use one and no other reverbs. There are several tricks to using delays to thicken reverbs and accomplish much of what several reverbs do, and delay is one of the least CPU-hungry plugs possible.

But if you're talking linear phase EQ's and transient manipulation etc, 1.6GHz won't cut it. 1.6 dual maybe.

And I hope you're talking Pentium M, a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 isn't going to do squat, and I don't recall the AMD laptop chips being much good at that speed either.

So basically i should just get a 2.0 ghz. pc with a intel core duo and 2 gigs of ram will be fine right? I plan using pt to track my beats from my fantom and once i track them i want to to be able to add different effects as well as soft synths.

No that is a pentium M processor you 'need' core 2 duo at least. It will run slow even if all you are doing is what you say you'll be doing. But not after to long you will want to play with compressors, eq, and other fun plug ins.

2 gigs of ram min 667MHz or above
2.0 + core 2 duo(standard now a days)

I run a 2.66 and it starts being slow at when I have about 15 plugins average fyi

Most experienced pt users are using macs fyi thats not a invitation to a debate all of you Windows lovers, thats just how it is. Facts are facts.

Yeah, Mac laptop is is the accepted way to go even here in the Windows side. But it may be a budget consideration, which I understand. I agree that

You could dual boot, not a bad idea to have XP!
