Okay, so I'm going to get a set of entry level studio monitors.
I am looking at: Event TR6 KRK RP6 and Alesis M1 active MKII Which of these generally get the better rcomendations? Also, are there any other monitors I should consider in the $350-400 range? And last, if I run these from my MBox, what's the best way to connect them? All of these monitors have XLR and 1/4" balanced. Obviously, the MBox side will connect with 1/4" balanced, but does it make any difference wether the connection on the speaker is 1/4" or XLR? Whatever I use to connect them with, I will make my own cables.

Buy a better set used. That's my advice.

I have a pair of Event TR8s. They are by no means top of the line but I think they sound great. They seem to really fit the room I mix in. Best bet is to go out and listen to a bunch of different types with a CD that you are very comfortable with. If you do a little searching through the DUC, you will see that this topic is very popular, but rarely does everyone agree. However, IMO, monitors are much more about personal taste as opposed to recommendations and price anyway. You can find some great sounding monitors for the $ you have to spend. You just have to look.
For your cables, no it does not matter whether you use 1/4 or XLR. I would however recommend that you use balanced cables whichever way you go. It will save you the time of having to post the other most popular question of "Why do I keep getting that annoying squeal or hum in my monitors". Hope this helps and good luck. |

Another vote for TR8s. I used to mix on my stereo, on a pair ofJBL Control 1s and with my Beyer headphones, and it was never right. The Events have been a complete revelation. SO much easier to hear where everything is and how the effects are altering the sounds. They may not be top flight, but if you're doing it as a hobby like me then they're more than adequate I think.

A vote here for the Alesis. I think these babies are way underpriced for their sound.

i considered wharfedale and m-audio for a similar price but these are way better. i managed to get 50 quid off the asking price too, which was nice. |

I'd definately go KRK over the other suggestions in the mentioned price bracket.
I use Dynaudio BM6s and Wharfedale Valdus 300 (hifi reference) The Dynaudios are incredible, so if you decide to upgrade...
