Default Faders are DEAD! Completely lifeless...

What do you do when the faders seem to be completely dead on your D-command? I have only been using my brand new D-command for less than a week and already the faders seem to be completely lifeless. No response whatsoever. Touch a fader and the screen doesn't show the movement. Move a fader on the screen, no motion from the fader on the D-command. I have tried to update the firmware, but it fails constantly, Ethernet directly in to D-command, restarting etc... Nothing works. Tried the RESET option in either the Utils or Prefs page, did nothing. I can get the PT to recognize that the controller is there, and everything else works but the faders are completely lifeless. Strange thing with the firmware, the version in the D-command and the one that it is trying to upgrade to is exactly the same EXCEPT for the first letter; installed already is a version which starts with the letter c and the one it is trying to update to starts with the letter v. Anybody know the difference? My digi rep is stumped.

any suggestions? Anyone have this problem before?

Thanks.

BTW, the motors prefs are set to "ON". Anybody ever have a fader die or all eight?

Any help would be appreciated.

hmmm ....

First : FW versions over here start with v ... both on control and command.

A couple of things to try :

Access the utilities direct from the fader section ... here's how :

press and hold in this order : shift - alt - option

then press : test - fader - touch :

Is there a read out on the leds above the faders ? It should indicate a frequency rouns 180 Hz and when you touch a fader there should be a 'T' appearing in the led to indicate touch is recognized.

How about 'step' and 'cycle' modes ? Do the faders move when entering either of those modes ? .... They should !!!

Or in 'group' mode you should be able to move all of them.

Did you try a 'recal' ?

These things should tell you wether the faders are working or not and are independent of wether the controller is configured to the computer or not.

If those things work the problem is elsewhere.

Did you try another ethernet cable ? As unlikely as it seems since you're able to configure it from the peripherals menu .... you never know ?

Hi Chris,

thanks for the tips. I will try those first thing tomorrow morning when I get in. I did the standard fader test to see if the faders would move and they did not. However, the scribble strips above the faders seemed to cycle their numbers that should have corresponded with fader position, I believe. Tried a different ethernet cable and still no fix.

thanks for the tips.

hmmmmm .... don't wanna sound pessimistic but that sounds bad.

Sounds like you're going to need a replacement unit. Have your dealer get a RA number and get tech support on it ...

That would be very unfortunate since I have only had it in use for less than a week.

I will be on the phone tomorrow morning.

thanks

Have you had a look inside? It almost sounds like a loose/bad cable in the faders somewhere. Dry joint maybe? Sounds like the brain of the desk thinks that faders are working, the messages just aren't getting there.

Maybe worth a look if it means not sending the unit back for repair?

HTH,

Iain

Hi Mike.
I had *exactly* the same problem last week. The right 8 faders of the D-Command fader module suddenly died. 3 months old... Same firmware issues here also. Reported the failure to my digi dealer and after ruling out software/setup/connection troubles, they wanted to take the unit for repair to Ireland or wherever, but then I could manage a local authorized technician to do the job in our facility. It turned out the logic board that drives and gets the data off those 8 faders died. He replaced that board altogether and all was well thereafter. I must say the response was quick.
Maybe you can ask for a "fail on arrival" (do you still have the packaging?) Digi would replace the whole unit.
I only hope this HW failure doesn't repeat. I had too many bad dreams with the "power harness" problem on the 002R
Good luck!!
Carles
