Default Anyone running 2021 on old cheesegraters?

With all of the speculation around the next PT update, I remembered that I haven't updated to 2021.3. I am still running a 2009 Mac Pro (4,1) flashed to a 5,1 with upgraded CPUs, but the machine isn't on the supported list any longer. I might have thrown caution to the winds, if PT 2021 didn't require a firmware update to my HD | Native card.

So, anyone with a similar machine and HD|Native made the plunge yet? Any problems beyond the bugs-for-all issues that are mentioned frequently here?

Hi,

we are running two 12core Cheesegraters on PT2021.3 (on Mojave). Beside the known quirks, they are doing fine.

Cheers
Maik

Hi Maik Marsian

But do you use HDNative Card?
Support told me that after updating the firmware I still could use older PT versions. I fear that i kill something with the required firmware upgrade.
I am always in the “middle“ of a project and do not have to much time for trouble ;-)

Ale

Thanks Maik!

Ale, if you look at Maik's sig file, it says HDN, so I expect that does mean HD|Native.

I have the same machine but running HDX. I have a bad feeling that the upcoming Hybrid engine would kill these old (2009-2012 MacPro) machines.
I’m hoping that they will still run with the hybrid engine turned off.
I am also running an Avid Carbon on my 2019 MBP and loving this new Hybrid workflow so maybe it’s just time to retire these 12 year old machines

So long already seriously keep them going for few more years until transition to Apple Silicon is done.

I also have an 2009 MacPro running Protools10HD with a HDAcell2. It has been running nonstop daily for tracking drums! 24 inputs with a mixture of Neve and API mic pre’s. It has been rock solid! And it has the lowest latency of all my systems. So no it’s not going anywhere soon

Same here. To be more exact, one 2009 Mac Pro running HD3|accell (v10), one 2004 Mac Pro running HD3 (v8), and one 2001 PowerMac running MIX3 (v6)

That's nice if what is available at your price point does what you need. My work (with a lot of sample-based VIs) really does benefit from all of the expandability, modularity and power that a tower can provide, (plus there's my HD Native card). I was close to buying a 2019 MacPro, even though I really don't think the price-performance equation on it is where I would prefer, and then the transition to Mac Silicon was announced, and I figured I'd wait, since "Why invest in the past if the new tools in 5-7 years will be made for the new tech?" So, now I'm waiting for 1) Apple's Silicon Mac Pro, and 2) Avid's support of Apple Silicon, and praying my highly-buffed 2009 cheese grater can hold the line until those 2 companies get that together.

FWIW, I do have a i9 MBP as well, but it has still choked on some of the sessions that I've tried traveling with, and the fan noise is a m*therf***er.
