Default ipDTL.com: ISDN replacement, runs in Chrome

Anyone tried it?

Care to share experiences with?

Their marketing seems targeted at radio stations, and primarily in the UK, but seems it'd work for any voice work. 320KBPS via internet.

Looks interesting. W've been using ISDN since the late 90's and would LOVE to loose that monthly line payment.

Not sure how to get Chrome to see the Avid interface, though. Must run through Core Audio, I guess? May have to play with it, and see if our VO talent in UK can hook up.

Won't work with HD from what I can tell. Should be OK with a FW or USB interface, however. I'll try tonight at home with my MB Pro 3.

look at Source Connect Now. Same idea as ipdtl but Source Elements is very experienced with voice over ip and have great support. Plus if you need access to more features you can go to their software based solutions. I use their stuff all the time and it's great and no ISDN fees

Just doing a little further research here -

Sounds like Source Connect Now, and ipDTL use the same codec, and a suite of stuff which is built in to Chrome.

I also just discovered SoundStreak - another package with low entry level cost, and using internet for transfer.

I gather the system records full-rez on the sending end, then transfers uncompressed files (.wav perhaps) non-real-time, right after recording. A relatively high-quality real-time connection used during recording.

For any of these, a core-audio audio interface would be required. Perhaps digital I/O patched in to 192 or HD i/o. Many mac towers can do optical SPDIF right on the motherboard, but I'm not sure if these can be externally clocked or how to otherwise deal with clocking matters. I'm unfamiliar w/ setup on Windows but perhaps it's similar.

Yeah, we do consistent VOs with UK and ISDN is 'the norm' over there. It's very stable for us and I'm happy with the quality, even though there are 'minimal' issues with decode bugs... but since it's live, I just have the talent backup a line and pickup. At this point, it would have to be a MAJOR advantage/quality upgrade for me to shift.

Thanks for the info, though....

It seems to be a nice solution for reviewing material with remote client and doing instant changes according to client requests...

As for now, VO recording with the Source Connect looks like better way of working.

Kuba

Source Elements has Source Nexus that lets you stream audio between Applications, it is a PT plugin. I use it to stream to and from Chrome. Then you can use Source Connect Now or other 3rd party applications.

SC Now has higher data rates than ipDTL and better support - more features too. Jolly nice people as well.

I have used it for a NY director to direct a London VO session for A&E's World Wars series. Worked a treat.

ISDN? that's so 80's…. SC Now sounds a heap better than ISDN as it uses way more modern and advanced codecs.

Here is my issue with source connect and this new IpDTL, it allows every VO actor who has no technical know how the ability to connect for little expense. The result is a signal based on some $100 USB preamp. Sure, isdn is expensive but it is solid.
